Prestolite CDI ignition

Post by HoosierDeereMan »

I had a Prestolite CDI box go bad on my '76 400. I know you can by replacement OEM from Central and Dennis Kirk. Does anyone rebuild the original Prestolite units? If so, what is the cost and what kind of luck did you have with it?

Thanks

HoosierDeereMan,
You can send it to Image Enterprise, they advertise to rebuild. Personally, I would watch for a NOS on ebay with the newer style round plug and splice in your rectangle plug connector. Another choice is to buy a Hewtech "FirePlug" cdi box. I have one on each of my 2 sleds.
Don't waste your money on the cdi's from Central or DennisKirk, they don't last.
Before you condemm the cdi box, check out the diagnostics in the FAQ section.

Prestolite CDI ignition

Harleysportster,
I know mine is bad. My resistance readings were with in spec for the coils and the trigger assembly. The only thing left was the ignition box. I tried a spare and the sled has ran fine since. I need to get one to replace the spare. What does the Hewtech model require? Can you buy just the CDI box or do you have to change the entire system? Is there any noticeable difference in performance from the Prestolite vs. Hewtech? What did the prestolite rebuild cost from Image? What does a Hewtech system cost?

HoosierDeereMan,
Hewtech's FirePlug cdi box is a direct replacement for the OEM prestolite.
Check out the web site for more in. The price is a little high but he offers a warranty. I do not know anything about the rebuilt units from Image.
