Hey Pat,
Great tip for all of us. Also, you should be able to order all the manuals from any Deere dealer too. The only ones out of print were the "Fine Tune" manuals. I also need to see if the "Service Textbooks" are still available from the mid-70's. They were full of model year update info and such too.
Thanks,
-Joe Rainville

I just ordered manuals for my sled from the 800# last wednesday. The guy was only on the job a few months and barely knew that sleds existed. Definately need ALL the numbers off the tag.
The 800# experience was much better than trying to get a manual for my 425 tractor through the dealer here.

The "Service Textbooks" from the early to mid 70's cover changes made to the entire line up of sleds, not just model specific information.
For example, they explain the differences from KEC 440/21 to the KEC 440/22's in 74, the chassis updates on the 100 series for 75, and other topics like cluch updates from Salbury to Comets and even ignition systems.
These manuals were model year specific, not sled model specfic. I have them for 73-75, but there may be more.

Hi Guys,
I have two of the Service Textbooks in front of me, STB-172M for the 73 sleds, and STB-188M for the 74's.
What they highlight are the changes for each model year. For 73, the Kohler engine is expained, and service proceedures are shown. They discuss the "new" KEC 440/21 Reed Valve engine, and the improvements to the piston ported motors.
For 74, the motors updates are noted, as are ignition troubleshooting procedures. They also discuss the chassis updates on the boggie sled, and the new for 74 slide rail suspension features and repair proceedures. They also reviewed the new Comet clutches that were standard in 74 and retrofitted to many 73's.
Most all this information would be covered in your regular repair manual. I am not sure when Deere stoped using these Service Textbooks, but I have seen them on the race sleds, inc. the 295/s and 340/s and Dator. If I am correct, Deere stopped using them in the mid-70's and started using the "Fine Tune" manuals instead. The earliest one of those I have is for 79-80 sleds, but I think they had them for the 76-78 LF and Cyclones.
I hope this helps answer any questions.

I just called and got information for the 80 sportfire sled that I have. It is a "Tech Manual" for sleds from 79-83, their pn: tm1222 cost is $45 for book and $30 for a CD rom.

Joe-
Is this correct? I am understanding that the service textbooks are just like the fine tunning manuals, only for the older sleds. If this is true do they still make them? If not is there anyone I can get all the 295/s information from? I have the factory service manual but it isn't very detailed.
Thanks Kurt

Kurt,
The fine tune manuals mostly have calibration information, such as jetting, clutch tuning, suspension adjustments, etc. I don't think they really replace the service textbooks, but it seem they might have stop using one, and gone to the other about the same time.
I do not know if the service textbooks are still availble, as I bought mine in a pile of manuals a few years ago. I do think the Service Textbook for the 295/s is available, as it hightlights the "new for 74" CDI ignition that was used on the -S sleds and then the LF and Cyclones, Dators and CC's until 78.
You may have to call Deere and check.
Good Luck,
-Joe Rainville

I have the book with every tech manual part number for every JD machine imaginable up to 1988. If your dealer can't find the manual by searching the sled model, E-mail me, and I'll give you the TM#.

Hi Guys,
TTTL, I have seen alot of Deere training materials for the Dealer Mechanics on slides and such, such as how to rebuild the TR-800, etc, but what I have are "Service Textbooks" from 73-75 that are regular size manual, right from Deere. I don't know if they stopped printing them when they started using the slide shows or not, but they do contain alot of interesting info for us collectors. Do you know if the "Slide Show" training info was available in regular manuals? There are a few topics I would like more info on, such as the TR-800 for example.
Thanks for all your info. What was your involvement with the Deere sleds? Must have been fun back in the day! (Sorry, but I was just a teenager back then)
Later Liquidator,
