Cylinder head
Cylinder head
I tore the engine out of my 73 X8 to change gaskets. took the clutch side of the engine head off and it has some pitting on it. It looks like a bunch of little dents in it. Other side has none. Cylinder walls both look fine, but I didnt take them off yet. The one piston has two pits in it not very big. What could have happened? Could this have caused my problems in my earlier posts? Probably should replace the head, but what about the piston? I'll tear it apart today and report my findings.

A little piece of piston did come off. Right around one of the ring slots. Wouldnt my cylinder be bad though and how could it get up top. Wouldnt the ring block it. The head I need is 36000752. My other head says 36000760. Problem? My cylinders are different too. The clutch side is 24030001 and the other is 24040001. Problem? The head problem could that stop it from running? I did have 120psi. Shoul I replace the piston?

The pits on the head can be lightly sanded to remove sharp edges not a big deal. Like rich said rings can do this also but if you have no broken rings something to look at closely is the rod bearings. These are needle type bearings you cant really see but check for loosness and or roughness as you rock the rod back n forth. Sometimes when these are failing peices of the needles fall out and get sucked in the cylinder and can cause the pitting Ive even seen the peices embeded into the head and piston.
