Hey I just purchased a 81 440 liquifire and when its cold it fires on the first couple pulls and it will run great until you shut it off then its a beast to get started again. It fires every time but dies after a couple of seconds. If you have the strenght to pull it enought times it will finally take off and run fine again. I haven't tore into it yet, I was hoping somebody would have some suggestions.

When it is starting hard take the plugs out, what do they look like?..dry? wet? Could be flooding out i saw this a lot when starting hard. If it isnt getting fuel check the pulse line from the fuel pump to crankcase. Have the carbs been gone through?

Rich so when the LF"s were new did you recommend cleaning carbs every year before use? Another question did all deeres come from the factory with the same jetting? or have to be re-jetted when prepping to suite elevations?

I just finished my 80 liq and had the same problem-started good cold then would not start hot. I found out the choke cables where adjusted ok when the guage panel was up but when I closed it they would move and flood the engine. That was my problem but just like the posts above it could be other things.

Rich hit the nail on the head (as is normal for him I have found out!)
When we were selling the last Liquifires, they required extensive reworking to run right for us. As we are at 6500 feet of elevation we, at the bare minumum, had to mill the heads to get the compression up, rejet the carbs and also rework the clutch.
One fellow I remember brought his 2 Liquifires from his home in Kansas to his friend's ranch by us and called us when the sleds wouldn't run right. We rejetted and off he went. Unfortunately, over the weekend he took them to the mountains and had the same problem all over again.
But boy oh boy would they ever run when set up right.

Excellent info Rich. That is interesting stuff. It really sounded like the LF"s needed a lot of work when taking out of the crate. Today guys (dealers) wouldnt wanna deal with anything like that. I work at a motorcycle dealership and all of our units never once need anything to make it run better but except the atv"s that have the carbs, we have to turn the air mix screw back a turn then they run better.
Deeredr. When did you work at a deere dealership? Did you guys just stricktly work on deere sleds? or did you take in any other brand sleds?

I think some may confuse TITTL's suggestion to add stabilizer to last season's tank of fuel, thinking that is all that is needed for summer storage.
Add the stabilizer, run it through, but remember his recommendation also stated "follow normal summer storage procedure".
As far as I know you are to drain both carbs and tank. Draining carbs includes pulling bowls off.
Do not leave fuel sitting in tank, carbs, lines or anywhere for 8-9 months of summer.
Winterizing also includes fogging engine. Putting oil down plug holes is a start, but that is not considered 'fogging'. Fogging gets oil to the crank.
Have fun.

I absolutly love this site. Thank you guys for all the info. I was at this site a few years ago, and it was great to find a couple other guys in love with JD sleds. I just came back here a month ago and wow, I have to thank you for running the forum, and a thank you to the guys who answer all the questions, it has made owning these sleds a pleasure, I have 3 80 LF's and was going to sell them, I read a pile of these forum postings and all the info has helped alot, the sleds couldn't be running any better now and I'm having a blast, my 11 year old daughter took one for a ride on her own today, I havn't seen a smile that big for a very long time. All three of our kids are begging me not to sell the sleds so how can i say no. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
