78 Liquifire 440 problems

1. My head light goes dim when I pin the throttle. It does this with the high or low beam on. When I let off the throttle the light is normal.

This sled was recently eaten alive by KIORTZ's Cyclone 440. Maybe there is some correlation to my lack of power? I would of thought that I could of at least kept up with him.

2. No top end- The sled runs like a top, just no top end. It actually feels like it slows down after it shifts. I disconnected the brake ( I know ) and it does the same thing so it is not the brake. The sled has 120 pounds of compression in both cylinders. The motor is a 440 not a 340, I checked. Even if it was a 340 liquid it should keep up with the 440 fan.

I know KIORTZ is kind of sneaky but I am pretty certain his sled is stock. Now that I think of it he did smoke his driver bolts the week before. I just chalked that up to Cyclone Crazy and his knock off parts he imports sweatshops in India.

Tasky,
The lighting cicuit is seperate from the ignition circuit.
Dim lighting... check all the ground wires and connectors and the voltage reg.

No top end... check your carbs, fuel pump, fuel filters, clutching, stator windings( look in FAQ section)
Check the gear ratio in the chain case for the 440 gears.

Harley's suggestions are all good ones, based on what I've seen with that sled start with checking the gears and clutching. You could also consider losing 80 lbs. of baby fat and maybe chop off 2 feet of that mullet hairdo.

The gearing was stock for Liquifire. I will go through the carbs again and go through the clutching this summer.

If I lost 80 pounds that would put me at 120 and I would still be 25 pounds heavier then you. You should unchain those migrant factory workers from the duldrums of your chicken coop and have them make you something to eat because you need a sandwich.

Tasky, take a felt tip & draw a line down both clutches then take her out for a high speed run this will tell you a lot by if your clutches are reaching max speed.

Kenny, as of know I am just looking for a crankshaft. I have found most of the other parts. Thanks for your efforts. I will try the magic marker trick. We might just get a reprieve from an early spring.

Tasky,had the same thing on a 78 cyclone,first the tach started jumping like a bad connection,then stopped working all together,then the lights went dim,then I lost all RPM'S after 5500,would start up on first pull everytime and sit there and idle all day!!!I hooked up the John Deere CDI/coil/stator tester and it showed bad stator?and it was!! works great again after that. it was getting bad so gradualy I never realy noticed it until I installed the new stator was like a different sled completely!!GOOD LUCK

Let me know when you are around. I would like to get started on the 295/s before fall.

Goodluck dealing with Greg, I have been trying to buy parts from him since December and he is less than 2 miles down the road from me. He never seems to be home, allways off on some sort of expedition. Last time I talked to him (when he decides to answer his phone) he was talking about cleaning out Canada before you have to have a passport to enter thier Country. He was bitchin about Old Navy because thier reproduction Mountie suit had longer cuffs on the sleaves and they would never keep his hands warm.
