CCw 440 Differences

Hi fellas!
New here with a few questions about above motor. I pulled one from a JD 600 and it doesnt have the ID tag on it. I don't even know if its a 440. Any "outward" indicators of size? It doesn't look to be a replacement or cobbled in at any time, but one never knows, do we?
Would gasket sets be the same, between the different designators.

Kenny,
Tell us what the serial number is located on the right side of the tunnel and we can tell you what engine came factory in it. The gasket sets are different between the different classes of engines.

My BAD!!!! Geez, spent all mornin, elbow deep in this thing and thought it was a 600. ITS A 500!!!!

Kenny,
You have an 1972 440/4 type CCW piston port engine , if it still original.
The 73 500 and 600 had the same engine, the 600 has a wider track.

I kind of think it is original. Are all the gasket sets the same for those motors? how about major parts, pistons,rings.....

This is kind of a goofy project, I am putting it into a 75 panther for a barnyard racer. A few local guys get together once a year and have a trail ride and afterwards break out thier panthers for a race. I got the panther and the 500 for free, no motor in the panther and drive sprockets gone in the 500, sooooo......
I also have a JDX 6, thought about putting that motor into it but don't know a thing about reed valve motors!

OK,I'm thinking this might not be the original motor. I've been told the clutch is from a Scorpion, so if the clutch is from another sled, the motor might be also.
So to get back to my original question, are there any outward markings/stampings that will identify this motor? It doesn't have the tag on it.
I am going to tear it down to give it a bath and might have to measure everything if that is what it takes.

Found a set of #'s on the base of one jug.

Anyone know what the E-121L means?

number 1 a kec 440/4 is an airplane engine and was not used EVER in john deeres

72 had a 440/2 engine 73 had a 440/3 engine and 75 had a 440/5 engine

they have same crank pistons crankcase starter fan recoil and seals and head gaskets.

/2 has short head fins and intake is squarish has two ports for intake in cylinder.

/3 has tall fins and intake is more v shaped has two ports for intake in cylinder.

/5 has medium sized fins intake is total different bolt pattern of early ones and much bigger port size,(note polaris liguids use a mikini mounting flange that matches perfectly) the intake also has two bolts for housing. has four ports in cylinder for intake .

exhaust on all three interchange some had bolts for housing some didnt.

engine shroud on all three are different the /2 curves above carb to cylnder.
/3 has a noticably higher area for the higher heads.

/5 has two bolt holes for two bolts to intake .

the 340rs engine is based off the /5 engine design.

for what it is worth the /4 engine design has a straight shaft no taper on pto side and no bottom bolt holes tapped in case. many didnt even have a starter installed as this engine could be started by flipping the propeller. i have heard that some were run without fan and housing as air cooled but this is unconfirmed.

i know what the deere books say. I also know this engine very well Canadian Curtis Wright lists the /4 model as airplane ONLY. hence anyone who thinks they have a /4 in thier snowmobile really has a /3 or /5 not a /4.

70's planes had them so go to a plane scrap yard and find one yourself.

I've been involved with UL aviation since the early '80s, I have no idea what aircraft the /4 might have been used on.

UL aviation began around '76, and 2 cylinder ( snowmobile type ) engines began being used in the early '80s.

My guess is that the CCW /4 engines would have been produced around '73, which would have pre-dated Ultralights, so unless there was some military application, I have no idea what they might have been used on.

neat ultralight info and hobby but no my pilot friends (one just died) said airplanes. if it helps one got destroyed in a james bond film.
