1981 Blizzard 5500mx

Post by _FIII »

Just at the end of the season my blizz was bogging real bad and then quit running. Checked after I pulled it home and found no spark. Started with plugs and then moved on to the coil. Replaced that and still nothing. New cdi box and bingo, I got nice spark. Now it will sometimes fire or every other sore arm worth of pulling it will start for about 5 seconds and then bog out and die. What's up with this thing? Timing issues maybe? Like I said, this was running all this winter like a top until the last time I rode it. PLEASE HELP......winter is coming eventually. Richard

Edit Note: blizz is an 82 not 81

Sounds like a FUEL problem. If you have spark you have air What elese is missing GAS. Try cleaning your carb and while its running spray come carba cleaner in the bowl. Also does it run choked and when you get ti running do you automically grab the throttle or let the throttle stay closed. BOB

You say you replaced the CDI, and then you had spark for a bit. Was it a genuine Bombardier part? Or an aftermarket box? I've worked on a few of the early CDI equipped 503's...and though the CDI's are vastly superior to the points used on the 1981 models, the CDI's can be a tad troublesome. If it's an aftermarket box you installed, I'd be leaning towards suspecting a bad new box...even if it's a genuine Bombardier item, it still might be at fault. The fuel system could of course be to blame.....and another thing I'd look for is a cracked piston skirt. I rather doubt the timing would be at fault...the only way would be if the stator mounting screws loosened up of their own accord and that doesn't often happen cause they are usually a pain in the butt just to loosen when you are actually trying to loosen them. Hope you get her running before fall, even if it's not a Deere.

Pete

PS: the boxes are pretty much the same on most 82-84 Doo Doos...so if someone near you has a Citation 4500 or an Everest 500 kicking around, you could try begging to borrow the CDI from their sled just to see if your new box is shot.

pretty sure the box is working. I had no spark, put new cdi on and now have nice big blue spark. It just won't catch, it'll fire a few times but nothing to get real excited about. I do have an 1981 mx parts machine with point ignition, but I really don't want to swap that all out. Just spent some cash on this one and with my luck I'll swap out ignitions only to have replace parts on the other one. Starting to get frustrating because this thing used to run so good. I did test the voltage coming out of the box after I installed it and the voltage was in the range that my 1998 Formula is supposed to have. That was all I had for a reference due to the lack of an 82 shop manual. Really hate elec problems. They take forever to diagnose and turn out to be something simple!

guys its a blizzard mx 503 81 dual carbs with the slug front end. also prone to cracking exhaust manifold and studs for exhaust tearing out.

sometimes the easiest thing like bad new plugs can cause the sore arm. try that and see if you make headway.
