 wht can I do to unstick a primary clutch, short of tearing it down. Or is this a problem that can't be fixed without a dif. clutch.

We have found that when installing the clutch bolt ( that screws into the crank ) on some of the Comets, especially the 108's & by using a air impact instead of a torque wrench to tighten it, it will bulge out the shaft & thus stick the movable sheave in about the mid to closed range. since finding this out we are now torquing the drive clutch bolt to MFG. specs.

Don't laugh at me if I'm wrong, I need a book for this thing if you can't tell ( so if anybody has one I'd be interested), but I think it is the TR800. It is engaging at about 5000 RPM's and that just seems high to me. I could be wrong.

Clutch engagement is more of a necessity & preference than anything else. If trail riding, to some 5000 RPM might be way to high, for playing around on lakes &/or racing 5000 RPM for some might not be high enough, I personally like 5000 to 5500. Mikuni Carbs seem to develop a bog when off of idle to wide open throttle when clutches engage is too low, when the clutch engages above 4800 RPM there usually is no bog.
Yes, if you have a very good selection of Carb main jets , pilot Jets, needles, & jet needles, a lot of time, & carb knowledge you can play with the carb jetting & get the bog out at a lower RPM, but when the outside temp changes you probably will have to repeat the whole process. It's just simpler for me to raise the engagement speed, BUT in doing so you have to watch that you DON'T increase the max engine RPM ( that for the newer Liquifires is 8000-8200 RPM)

I had exactly the same problem you mentioned Ken. I ran the clutch bolt down with an impact, and the sheave would stick. After that I was careful to torque the bolt on. This winter I pulled the clutches on an '80 LF. I finished everything EXCEPT I didnt install the clutch bolt. The torque wrench was in a different garage so I was going to grap it and install it the next day. This sleds engages at around 6200 RPM. The next day I fired it up, let it warm up, and took it full throttle across the yard. The clutch hit the TPR, bounced up through the hood, took out the corner of the windshield, and almost took off my head. Needless to say, I forgot to reinstall the bolt. It ruined a brand new 108EXP also, when the outside sheave spun on the crank. 1 shot $80 TPR, 1 Carlisle $70 belt, 1 $400 clutch, 1 $100 Windshield, 1 hood. Memories - priceless.

Greg been there did that, only wasn't near a costly, MAYBE some of these guy's will understand when I say that a snowmobile clutch can be as dangerous as a hand grenade when it blows up.

Thats the lower half of your bulkhead. There is one on each side. TPR [thermal plastic rubber - I believe is what it stands for] Your LF has a blackone on each side the Trails and Sports have the same type panels only silver color.

Hey Greg,

Just to keep you honest, although the 80's Liquifire TPR (yes, it was ThermoPlastic Rubber) looks like the Trail/Sport version, they in no way interchange. They mount defferently to both the tunnel and bumper.

The Trail/Sports share a chassis and the TPR's of course interchange, as do the front bumpers. Sorry if you already knew that...

Rich,

If that flying clutch had the "Rainville Factor" it would have come off when the sled was 10' in the air going over a double jump! Of course the landing would have been spectacular but I would have walked away going "what a ride!..."

My Snocrosser was landing "funny" this past winter, so I pulled off the track only to imediately pass my ski, spindle, shock, tie rod and chunk of my upper A-arm. My first thought was: "that is going to be expensive..."

Later Liquidator!
