Update 12-08-05.
After doing the spark plug check which showed a severe lean condition. I decided to go from front to back in fuel system again.
Lines, filters, cleaned tank, new impulse line, etc, etc.
Put it all back together and she ran perfectly. Spent the next hour doing test runs in an open park and ended up with high speed needle 1.25 - 1.5 truns out. That seemed to give a nice brown color to the plug and sounded great @ WOT.
I can't say exactly what it was, maybe a bit of debris kept getting in the carb and messing with the high speed circuits? I did notice an extremely loose impulse pump line. I guess it could have been something as simple as that! I can't say for sure.
So, thanks to all that offered suggestions...she seems to be working fine now. Cheers.

Congragilations and good work man. Now remember to get all the gas out at the end of the season so you can ride and not wrench next year.

UPDATE: JD300 Running great.
Spent way too much! It was based on nostaglia, this sled has been in family since new. Sadly the crank was rusted and bearings shot. I shopped online and found an NOS crank for $20. Pulled engine apart and sent it to Image Enterprises (cheaper shipping in smaller boxes, and I didn't have to pay labor for them to pull it apart). New crank, NOS .20 over pistons, seals, both cylinders bored .20 over, (guess its a JD320 not a 300!!), complete comet duster clutch rebuild, new points, coils. Then had Image bench run it and check for problems. Total bill was under $500 including shipping. So probably not to bad. (I do my own top end rebuilds, but always send it to a reliable shop to do the bottom end, as they have tools to check crank etc.) Now I need to pull the 2ndary apart and clean it up, and a new seat and its done. Kind of dumb to spend that much, since you can buy a running 00 series usually for a couple hundred bucks. But I can say it is nice to have it rebuilt and still in the family.
**When I look back on all the little problems have kicked my butt over the years, 99% of the time its usually something little. This time it was a 7" piece of stupid impulse line that was loose!! Oh well.
