I have a friend that is going to give me a Honda ATC90. Any thoughts? It doesn't run right now, physically it's fine, the engine looks beat up. I don't know year, probably mid 70's.

ATC 90, that would be pre what, 86? I think that was one of the last years for the 3 wheelers.. I road a friends quite often..at least as often as I could :>

If the frame is good, there are or was a lot of them out forsale, you might find a good donor engine.

I had a late 70's ATC90. I had more fun on that toy than any other machine I have ever owned! I should have never sold it. Enjoy!!

I'm going to get it this week, I have some pics but I would have to have someone post them for me. I have some questions on the engine, but everything else looks ok.

I don't know for sure about this, but maybe you could use an engine out of an atc 110. They are pretty similar.

How's about checking out some of those Chinese Honda clone engines on ebay? I'm sure there should be one that'll bolt right in.....and they're pretty cheap too. There's a few of them running around here and they seem like reliable engines. I think some of them are sold as Lifan engines.

I would be wary of those Chinese engines. Liq 4/6 do they make one for a sled. BOB

Actually, Bob, the Chinese Honda lookalike mills seem quite good. I've bought a fair number of those little 50 cc and 110 cc 4-stroke youth ATV's on ebay and sold them locally. The engines seem tough as nails aside from a few leaky carbs. But the rest of the machines are pretty much crap....poor welds, bad frame jigging, junk controls, etc etc. Yet, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of those engines if I was trying to get a worn out old Honda on the road again. Nope, I haven't seen any Chinese sled engines. Who knows? Maybe they'll start building some yet.

I can vouch for that bob. I bought a sunL 90 for my kids...worst 600 I've ever spent. And I would completely agree on the frame, bad welds, etc. I wrenched on that thing more than any thing else I've ever owned. Some how, the head got a big hole in it, UNDER the fins...explain that one..the fins are fine but the hole is under them.

The engines - I would have to disagree with L4/6. The experience I had with the one in the sunL was horrible to say the least. Not only did it not have protection but it was very difficult to gain access to anything to work on. Even to change the oil with any ease you needed to take half the plastic off. Top that off that with poor casting (imho), hardly adjustable carbs, and a unexplainable never ending goo all over them I was less than happy a month after I got it. The only positive it seemed was the plug was accessible.

The battery "tray" was also a poor design and didnt even fit the battery that came with it(that may have been a dealer thing). And dont get me started on these little batteries, if you dont use them daily they only last 3 months and 1 day.... 1 day longer than the warranty on all the ones i found. For 60 bucks they should last a lot longer. The 35.00 one in my trailfire also from fleet has lasted 2+ years with only pulling the neg cable in the summer.

Lesson learned, I'll wait until I can afford a name brand next time.
