WOW! Thats unfortunate.

Makes you think twice about registering old sleds after you've done all the restoration work to them! I wonder if there is a way to check before you start any work on a sled if its stolen or not??? Seeing that sleds ususally just come with a bill of sale!

I suppose you could run the serial numbers at the local DMV?? But sounds like it took them two years to realize it was stolen!!

From personal experience, I would be contacting the state's attorney from which the county you live in and pursue this in that direction. I would be sitting in jail if they local pokey came and took my stuff.......but I live in Hazzard County and I am friends with Boss Hogg and Roscoe..

A suggestion would be to find out Who the Insurance Co. is & contact them as long as you have a receipt for some of the items YOU purchased for the sled you might be able to purchase it back... Less the parts you put on it & your labor & storage fees, you might be surprised on how little you can purchase it for & get a clear title...
Or they might file charges against you for holding stolen property, LOL
I'm willing to bet that in the next year you'll be able to buy it back at the next local police auction. That Ins co. wrote that sled off long ago, the DNR & local police just want to make the crime page in the local paper on how good they are in salving old crimes....

I really feel for you, abby. Sounds like you put alot of time and money into the Yamaha, only to have it taken away. When buying old vintage sleds, I never check into their history much and just assume the sellers are ligit, but I guess we'll all have to be more wary in the future. I hope you can get some of your investment back.

When I went to register 2 of my sleds for the first time last winter ( just prior to the HOF trip ), I was squeezing my left one while the gal at the DNR ran the serial numbers. I had a lot of time and $$ in at that point.
I had just a signed piece of paper on the X8, nothing on the X300.
In WI, these sleds would have had just a bill of sale.
You just never know, the sled could have been listed as stolen many years ago.

When we titled our '55 Chevys 30 years ago, we used the VIN tags off of cars we had clear titles to, rather than try to re-register and title anew.

As for this situation. I'd try to make a deal with the insurance company ASAP.
Right now it is sitting somewhere where it is an open invitation for stripping.

Good luck!

Legally, I didn't think they could do this if you have a bill of sale. You purchased it so you own it. They should be going after the person who sold it to you.

My mom and dad had the same thing happen to them about 20 years ago. They bought draft horse harness that turned out to be stolen. They bought it at an auction not knowing this. A couple of weeks later a cop showed up and took the harness back.
The cop said stolen is stolen end of story, yes it is too bad. They didn't get their money back either. And leather harnesses for draft horses' isn't cheap either.
I hate to say it but you probably won't ever see your money again. But Kenny is right see if you can buy it back from the Insuracne company, that may be your only chance.
If they made bullets cost $5,000 dollars each there would never be any accidental shootings!
