Hi Magnus!

Send me your NOS LF Tunnel and I will tell the secret to fixing your track.

Well, as tech-editor, I guess I have to tell you. You need a new track. Deere never sold the belting loose, and those tracks are a pain to find.

Good Luck!

Joe, Are they the same as the Traifire tracks? Magnus I have some belting ( no cleats ) but I can't guarantee how good it is or how long it will last. I do know that one of the outer belts are bad now. Do the outer belts swap from side to side???
Problem is I'm leaving for MN tomorrow morning early so I won't be able to ship for a month, if it will even work. I will ck the part number on the inner belt.

Magnus, It's a AM54969, but I'm sorry to say that the 3 outer belts all have a crack in them, & so does the inner belt outers are crack on the inside & the inner is cracked on the outside.
sorry, I guess I should have looked at them when I picked them up....

Anyone know it a track can be Vulcanized?? or if there are people out there still doing the vulcanization process??

Yes. Vulcanizing is done all the time on industrial belts. The problem with a rotten snowmobile track is just that, it is rotten.

I'm not so sure I'd call these rotten, I guess someone more experienced at looking at rubber than I would have to determine that??? I would call this more of improper storage ( meaning probably rolled up in a roll & the first starting point or end rolled to tight)
That is what it looks like to me.. Kind of like twisting a drive belt into a roll for storage on a snowmobile instead of using a proper belt holder..

Well depending on how bad the rubber is this may be an option. If you can even find someone who does it. Ive seen a company come into a place I worked in the past and repair a conveyor belt they took out a section and spliced a new section in. Not sure it can be done on a track but who knows.

Depending on how bad the rip is and where................ you can take 2 pieces of steel and place them on both sides of the tear and drill them through and buy long rivets and rivet it all together. I have seen this done but the longevity and safety issue of this I am not sure of.

How would the steel roll around the drivers & the rear wheels & then straighten out for the rest of the revolution?????

Hey Guys,

Kenny, you failed the "JD Track Interchange Pop Quiz", so I will offer a quick remedial tutorial:

All 79-80 Trailfire, 80 Sportfire, 78-82 Spitfire, 82-84 Snow and Sprintfire original tracks interchange. The 81-84 Trail and 81 Sport are 1/2" wider and hit the tunnel on the Direct Drive sleds.

I've seen some of those belts NOS that were dry rotted and cracked. That doesn't give much hope for any used ones. I would love to find the orginal tooling for these and have the re-made with stronger rubbers.

Although I am not a plactics expert, from what I understand it's the plasticizers evaporating out of the belting that causes them to get brittle and crack. Re-vulcanizing can repair a healthy ripped track, but I am with Peter, I don't think it would "replentish" the plasticizers in the rubber.

Maybe I should really get back to work on small diameter 3.29" hex drive sprocket and a hex shaft for the DD sleds!

Joe, I can tell you that drivers will COST about $30.00 ea ( If they still have the mold & a broach, a New Broach is if I remember right is $150.00) with a minimum order of at least 100, cheaper if ordering 150 or 200.. Then you have the cost of the hex shaft (1045 CDSR MATERIAL in 1.125 HEX isn't cheap) & then getting 50 of them turned down & a Key way put on both ends unless you know somebody with a lathe & mill with a lot of spare time....
Have you cked with the guy who is supposedly re-poping Cat tracks to see if he would/could do the Tailfire. Snow/Spit tracks??? He's been advertising on the NHSMA Board
Just my $.0685 worth

I'm pretty sure Joe knows a tool and die maker who has machine tools in his home shop. Of course, he'd probably want to do the job on a CNC.

What I saw Kenny was a tear that was repaired as if someone put a cleat on it, same principle. Lay the steel over the tear, or cleat over the tear on both sides and rivet it in place.

Kenny,

The major problem with new drives for the DD sleds is either the mold charge or the high piece cost of CNC'ing the drive sprockets out of a block of plastic.

After the mold charge, the high piece cost comes into effect.

This is one of several reasons I haven't made the kit yet. I do think I will have to try one for myself though and see how well it works.
