snowmobile trivia

FIII, Yes, Yamaha was the first sled maker to offer oil injection....however, their first model, the 1968 SL350 was a premix sled. The 1969 SL351 was the first sled to come with oil injection. Not sure who was the first to come out with twin pipes.

qwerty, In the late sixties and til about 1971, Polaris offered a huge worksled called the Voyager and it had a big mother of a track.....30 inches wide. I'm actually dealing on one right now, but it needs lots of work and the guy still wants lots for it. as far as longest production run, I'd guess it to be a toss up between the Ski Doo Alpine and the Arctic Kitty Cat.

Rodimus, I beg to differ on the biggest 74 Oly engine. I have the skeletal remains of a 74 in my backyard and removed the engine from it a couple weeks back and it is a 440 and I'm almost certain it was still the original mill. An old trapper neighbor of mine had both a Olympique 400 and 440 in 74. They existed, honest.

Qwerty, Hydraulic torque converters were used by Arctic Cat in the 1974 VIP Panther and also by Yamaha in the 74 & 75 TL433 as well as in their 72 & 73 EW643. The Cat version used a timing type chain whereas the Yamaha ran a thin belt to transmit power from the engine to the converter.

what brand of snowmobile was sold in McLeods retail stores?
what were the two models?
who manufactured these sleds?

These I do know the answer to. I have the smaller of the two models.

Macleods sold Hiawathas. I believe the earlier (1967ish) models were produced for them by the Larson boat company and were named after natural disasters....Hurricane Tornado or Cyclone, perhaps? I think they used JLO mills. The following year, Hiawathas were built by Polaris. I'm not sure which was the smallest. Which one do you have, FIII?

the alpine was in production from 1963-1996 for 33 years although the first couple of years it was called the rd.

of houourable mention is the yamaha bravo, introduced in 1981 and still in production as a long track work sled.

i hope the track on that polaris is in good shape.

there was the X-17 Hurricane ,(297 JLO & 18" track) and the X-14 Cyclone(292 JLO & 15" track). I have the 1968 Cyclone, and it was made by Polaris.

70-71 Sno Coupe had three models. Two with dual 15.5" tracks and one model with a single 30.5in track. They actually used chevy impala tail light assemblies.
