timing my 300

Post by _FIII »

Trying to time my 300 green machine with no luck. Here's what I have done, please let me know if there are some fatal errors in my method.

1) found TDC with a dial indicator.(marks on the flywheel and fan housing line up)
2) found .090" BTDC (marks on flywheel and fan housing line up here also)
3) advanced timing cam and held it with a 1/4" bolt screwed into one of tapped holes

Now at this point at the .090" BTDC mark with the timing advanced the points should be set at .016" gap, correct? What I have found is that the points aren't even open yet. They don't start to open until about TDC(with timinig still advanced). So if I set them to .016" at BTDC then when it gets to TDC the points are gapped to like .060". I have never had a timing problem with any sled so this is kinda my first time really doing this. Am I doing this correct?

The sled will sit and idle pretty decent but will not move. It justs bogs down. When on my sled lift with the track of the ground it will rev up (when pumping the throttle) but nothing with weight on the track.

Please help!!! There is white stuff on the ground!!!

When the Points open, the Magnetic Feild(s) Collape. which is where your Voltage/Spark Comes From. So if the Field collapes at TDC. I'm going to say the Spark is occuring at TDC.

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong. I just learned this stuff in my Electronics class, and got a 19/20 on the Ignition ASE style test.

Hey Richard

I just finished setting up the timing on my 300 and I also ran into a few glitches till I got it right..

If the gap is still closed when checking BTDC you maybe doing what I did and confused the #1 cylindar with #2 . This was a real rookie ops on my part as I figured anyone who tears a motor apart should know 1 from 2. It took me a while to realize that mistake.

I also got the clockwise\anti clockwise backwards as the manual references the rotation when you are looking at the clutch side of the crankshaft.

Finally setting the point gap is critical . I've always hated setting the points . It's very subjective to each one of us as to what level of drag you should feel when running the gape guage between the points. I also bought a set of brass guages so they wouldn't be getting grabbed all the time by the magnets.

It took me a few nights to get this right and I found that if I started to get worked up when things didn't go right it was best to walk away and try again the next day.

Good old Regina eh... I'm out that way for work 2 or 3 times a year... Can't beat the palm trees and beach in February ..

Hope this helps

I got my timing set real nice today. My big problem now is the carb. I put a vm34 Mikuni on it last year and I don't think it is jetted quite right yet. Will have to wait until cooler weather rolls in.
