i have a 78 jag 3000 . i got it because of the free air engine. reminded me of the spitfires and the guy only wanted 20 bucks for it. it starts and seems to be super fast but wont idle right. there is no air box on it could that make a difference?any thoughts are dully noted.

Wont idle right.... Like a Rough idle, Jumping around.. or kinda just stalls? Does it have the Walbro Carburetor on it? or mikuni? Hows the Idle Adjustment?

The Jag was a heckuva a good little sled, especially the free air models (this coming from a guy who doesn't care much for Cats). I'm not 100% certain about the 1978 Jag, but the 76 Jags didn't have airboxes.....I doubt yours had one from the factory either, however you should look into that and if it did, you should find one and install it. The 78 Jag should have a Mikuni slide valve carb on it if it's stock. I'm betting your idle probs are due to a clogged pilot jet. Remove your carb and take the float bowl off. Look inside the now exposed area of the carb body. You should see a brass jet with a slotted head inside an what looks like an aluminum tube extending downward. Find a small slotted screwdriver that fits nicely into the slotted head. Try removing it gently. On an old carb, these pilot jets can sometimes be stuck so tightly that you'll end up breaking the slotted head from the jet, so don't try too hard. If it comes out, clean it thoroghly with some carb cleaner and compressed air. If it's real stubborn to remove, leave it in it's place and blow some air through it and try squirting carb cleaner thru it. You should be able to see a tiny hole right thru the jet when you hold it to the light. By the way, the Jag F/A's never idled particularly smoothly, but they should idle reasonably well. One other thing that can cause you grief on those sleds is the throttle safety switch. It's a weird set up...the throttle cable that you see attached to your throttle thumb lever is not the same cable that goes to your carb. There's a short cable integral with the kill switch which goes to your lever. The other end attaches to the main cable in a little black plastic housing under your bar pad. This switch can act up and cause idling probs...sometimes you can cure it by adjusting the throttle cable...sometimes you end up having to replace the kill switch assembly. If you need a new switch, don't buy an aftermarket one...they're junk. Hope this helps ya.

If I land this 81 Trailcat this weekend and anyone has a 78-81 Jag 3000 in perfect and I mean perfect condition. I may be open for a trade. The jag is another sled I grew up on with my Uncles.
