80/81 LF help

Post by tobeybacon »

hello everyone im new to the jd sleds. im on the east coast and it is hard to find much help or parts here but anyway. ive read a lot of the posts on here hoping that i would find something that would help me and i did find some info to be very helpfull. thankyou i have a 80 LF just rebuilt the engine and im having a hard time getting it to run good it wont even move itself around when i run it with the track off the ground it will rev right up but with it on the ground it gets to about 4500-5000 rpm just after the clutch engages and it just sits there ive tried cleaning and tuning the carbs. i think there are some parts missing out of them. i put all new seals in the engine tried different coils different clutch different cdi nothing seemed to help this thing out i dont know if the cdi boxes are the greatest and i also dont know what has been done to the carb and what might be missing. please give me any suggestions or where to start testing things. i have three of these and i dont want to have trouble with the other 2 any sugestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. thankyou

thanks for the advise on the carb i did just what you said except for check out the faq for tuning them i will do that asap the oring that is in the carb where does it go the only gaskets that are in my carbs are the ones under the needle seat and the bowl gasket. i did take them entirely apart and dipped them let them sit for two days and cleaned them with carb cleaned and compressed air. i do have the service manual for the machine but it is one that is photocopied and the carb pictures are not real clear. this is my first experience with power jet carbs and i am not familiar with them all my other sleds have regular mikunis on them. is there supposed to be two jets in the bowl and then the main? my carbs only have one in the bowl? it looks like in the book there should be two. it was warm out when i was running it close to 40 out mid 30's at the coldest i will check everything and try again. as far as the rest like ignition do u think that stuff is good? are there any little problems common to them? thanks for the advise so for i really enjoy reading on this site!

well im deffinetly missing some parts to the carb. i bought this sled and two other LF from a kid that thought he knew about sleds but as im discovering on even the others he really didnt know much about them. he rebuit one of the other engines and was running it until i bought it. when i bought it the base gasket was leaking on the mag cylider. i ripped the engine down to go over it and found that he also bent the crank durring dissassembly for new seals. lots of little things but im trying to get them all right thanks for the help so far.
