Cylinder Lining on K340FA

Post by ND1 »

I bought some NOS 78 Spitfire cylinders, and there is no sleeve or coating on the cylinder wall, just solid aluminum.
Are they supposed to have an iron liner, or nica-sil coating?
I cannot tell by the original ones, but I only pulled the cylinder head off to take a look.

OK thanks Rich I've only been into one & that was in 1978 when I had to change the heads on one when the young driver hit the groomer blade head-on & sheared all the fins off both heads, know one hurt except the Spitfire, LOL That's when we bought it from his dad & I couldn't remember if they were chrome or steel lined cyl.s.

I guess I dont understand why new packaged cylinders would have to go in for a coating. So these dont do me any good, considering the price of having that done.
Any one want to buy these, they are scrap aluminum as far as I am concerned.

Im just disappointed after buying NOS pistons, cylinders, and crank; that I cannot put it all together

But thanks for the replys

No, I can even see the machining process on the aluminum, they didnt come with studs either, They came in genuine Kohler boxes, not JD, maybe thats how JD purchased them and finished the process themselves.

That's really weird. I can't see how an NOS cylinder escaped the plating process. The chrome on those cylinders was not at all shiny and could fool a person into thinking they weren't plated. I guess it's no sense asking for pics as they probably wouldn't show very well. Those engines were tough mills aside from the odd CDI problem. I ran my 79 Spit to the bar all the time and in any weather and never had any internal engine probs. I remember one poker derby in late March with 40 degree F temps and slushy snow. People thought I was nuts to be running a F/A in those conditions, but it took it in stride while several fan cooled sleds packed it in.
