Liquifire Motor Identification

Post by deerefanatic »

Hi guys, I've decided to drop the spare 340 Liquifire Motor I have into my 78 for this season as cash is kinda tight and all I'll need for this motor is different carb jets.

That leads me to this question: What are ways of know whether this is a 76 or 77-78 motor as they have different jetting requirements? It has square CDI plugs, though I know that doesn't mean much (could have been changed for some reason)

Also, I'll be using my stock 440 Final drive gears... I know performance will suffer, but are there any simple (and cheap) clutch tweaks that could help? My sis will be probably be riding it primarily and she doesn't really like to break 25mph anyway!

:P

Thanks!

I can post the (engine) serial number if any of you have a table that shows what's what....

the parts book only shows two 340 liquid motors with a chassis serial number break of - 70000 & 70001-
But it shows three 440 motors with a chassis serial number break of - 70000 & 70001-
80000 & 80001-
The 76-79 fine tune manual says @ sea level @ 0 to +40 Deg.
1976 liquifire

jet needle 6DH3*4 --- 6DH3*3
needle jet O-8 --- P-0
Throttle valve 2.0 --- 2.5
Pilot jet 45 --- 40

1977 & 78 Liquifires

76 340 liquifire gearing 21/39, Gov RPM 7000-7500
76 440 liquifire gearing 24/40, Gov RPM 7250-7750
77-78 340 liquifire gearing 21/39, Gov RPM 6800-7300
77-78 440 liquifire gearing 24/40, Gov RPM 6800-7300

Sorry I can't tell you what the difference is other than that.

Yep, I knew that stuff.... Just trying to figure out which engine I've got... I have the fine-tuning manual with that info in it..... Thanks though.

I have a feeling it's a 76... I happen to have the carb parts for a 76 motor.. I'll try em and check the jetting and see what it does....

Do you have the original carbs for the engine. They have ID numbers stamped on them which corresponds to the year.

Nope, in fact, my 78 had 340 carbs on it when I got it... And no, my spare engine is from a totally different person.............

And yes, I did rejet those 340 carbs for my 440 sled, so that's not why it melted down! :}

If someone with a 76 340 liquifire could look at the head on their engine and report back the casting numbers on it, the 77/78 340 head was changed and the casting number would be different. You would be able to figure out yours by matching the numbers.

Generally the 76's were the only "square CDI plug" motors built, as the 77-78's were the round plug. But, as you said, it could have been changed.

Also, some of the jetting changes Kenny talks about were because of air box changes. The 77-78 was less restrictive than the 76's. They took out the "cheese grater" plate and changed the inlet baffel too.

I "think" they may have also revised the porting too, but can't swear to it. The 340 was 45 hp in 76, but 47 hp by 78. Not totally sure about 77, but "I think" they were 47 hp also.

I hope this helps!

So jet it a bit on the fat side and see what happens?
