spitfire motor

HI, My step son trashed the free air motor in his 76 spitfire and I was hopeing someone could tell me what I should be looking for or settle for? I know next to nothing about sleds and any help will be appreciated!! Thanks Stu

Hi Stu99. '78 was the first year for the Spitfire. In '78 and '79 they were green and used a Kohler engine. There's one on ebay right now with a day left. It is auction #230196843206, and it's in Angola, Indiana. Maybe that's close to your location. In '80 they started using Kawasaki f/a and painted them black. So, if your sled is green, it has a Kohler, if it's black, it has a Kawasaki.

P.S.. The date stamped on the tunnel is the manufacture date. Maybe the 6 in '76 is actually an 8. Sometimes they're hard to read. It's a common mistake for people to refer to a machine by it's production date. It drives me crazy on ebay sometimes. In other words, if it was built in '78, it's actual model year is '79.

Spitfireguy; that's the part I wasn't sure of. I didn't know if a Kohler would bolt to a Kawasaki mount plate and vice versa. But that's nothing that a drill wouldn't cure anyway.

stu99.. What did he trash on the motor?..Have you tore it down? I have a couple spitfire Kohler Motors laying around..Maybe an easy fix?? Just a thought... Frankie...(Iowa)

The color is green, the problem is the cylinders are scored according to the guy who was trying to fix it for us. There are a few other small troubles, like cables and such. I looke don e-bay, but again, not knowing what to look for...kohler 341 the right one? Thanks everyone for the fast responses!!

No offense but if you have limited sled knowledge you would be best to stick with an exact motor from the same yr sled. If your having a skilled person do the work the kawasaki motor could be an option if he wants to go that way. It might be a good idea to have him repair your motor also then you will know for sure your starting with a good motor. Most important thing is make sure he determines why the cylinders got scored to begin with so it doesnt happeb again.

I've got a 79 Spit that needs a CDI and could always use a spare motor.
Any spare CDI ? Do the motors run? That is, if your willing to part with one

I will be tearing down a good Kohler 340, with good compression and be willing to sell the cylinders, pistons, and crank as a package; all you will need is a gasket kit and rings to complete your rebuild. If that is the way you want to go, PM me on a price. The only reason I am tearing it down is because I have all new NOS parts that I need to use up; no reason to sit there and collect dust!

Mine is complte. Just ned a CDI I believe ( no spark)
Could always use extra parts Though. Any CDI's ND1?

i had a 80 and a 78 spit and i swithed the motors. took me one afternoon in my back yard.spitfires fit into other spits like nothing. would anybody no if a snowfire would be interchangable with a spit?

The Snowfire engine is identical to the 80-82 Spitfire mill. The only differences would be the exhaust manifold, the carb and the engine base plate as far as I know.
