Deere vs. Deer?

Post by b00stinGTP »

Well, my dad and I hit the trails again tonight. We got a bunch of rain, so there wasnt anyone else out on the trails, but it was like riding on ice. We left the house about 4:15 and took off for the usual 30 mile jaunt down the trail. We had already spotted about 3-4 deer, and it was getting dark so we decided we better head back.

We had just crossed a road, and there was a nice wide open spot I wanted to top out on. I got up to about 60mph when I saw a deer cross the trail up ahead, so I slowed down until it passed and kept going. Sure enough as I get closer I see movement off to the side of the trail, and three more deer come running out, I slam on the brake and fishtail off the side of the trail to avoid the deer, and my dad does the same to avoid me/ the other deer. Im just glad I didnt slam into a deer... in a deere

How ironic would that be?

I used to see that a lot when we would get several feet on snow in northern wi. There deer would run down the trail in front of my deere 'cause it was an easier trail for them. Better than jumping through 4 feet of snow through the woods i suppose. Nice miss...

No kidding...it woulda been ironic. I'm glad you didn't hit the deer with your deere, cause you mighta been in need of a john. A buddy of mine hit a moose with his Polaris XC....man that sled was a mess, but surprisingly all he had was some sore ribs

I'm sorry, but that's hilarious!!! I'm sure it wasn't fuuny at the time though.
That's better than my brother hitting an ice fishing hole with his Sportfire (1.4 miles on it) & rolling it over. Our Dad gave him a part of the windshield for a Christmas ornament 2 weeks later.

I hit a fawn(about 80 pounds) doing somewhere around 70mph. I had to cut it's throat because I broke 3 out of 4 legs. I figured the sled was toast, but the only damage is it moved the hood on the hinges and cracked the plastic inbetween the seat and hood on my XC600. Also had a young bull elk that wouldn't get off the trail by Clam Lake WI. I know if I would have had a Arctic Cat Cougar I would have had no damage at all. HAHAHA

I know a guy who bought a brand new sled years back. Loaded it up drove out of town unloaded it and hit a culvert a half mile down the road. It was back at the dealer in under an hour at least all the pieces were there. Picked up a new one and continued on!

It's a good thing he didn't have a Cougar. He would've had to pay for a new culvert instead!!!

Rich,

That story is a riot! Sounds like something I would have done in my younger days, you know, like last year or so...

My "close encounter" with 4 legged Deere was about 2001. I was leading a pack of sleds back home at dark (hate leading at night, but I knew the trail best), and I was taking it easy at about 45 to 50 mph leading about 6 sleds. All I saw next where feet and fur. Not one deer, but 3 jumped in front of my sled. At least one set of hoofs cleared the windshield and my helmet.

All my buddies saw from behind was feet flying through the air over my sled. I jammed on the brakes, and we all had a good laugh over it. Not one scratch on me, or my 99 Cat Z-440 Sno Pro, but I was a little shook up. So for the rest of the ride home I got to have both barbed wire and deer hoof flashbacks!

Oh, what fun...

I think that 427cobra needs to share his story about the drainage ditch that jumped out in front of him while riding his trailfire a few years back.....

I will give a little background on the sled first. It was my first snowmobile I owned and I got it back when I was in high school. So when I picked it up I didnt know what hyfax or carbides were...ha. From what I can remember it was in near perfect condition!

It was a 79 or 80 340 TF with electric start. My buddy and I went to pick it up in the back of my dad's mini van! We got it in the back of the van and back to my place all in one piece. All I had to do was replace the fuel lines and a new battery and I was in business. So the next day it was time to ride!

So the next day my buddy and I were out tooling around in the fields around my house and everything was running good. So we decided to go for a longer ride. He took the wheel and I sat on the back. We drove it over to the local Jr High where we drove around the soccer fields. On our way back I got to drive while he sat on the back. I decided to take a slightly different way back. We were crusin back and saw a row of weeds. Well I didnt realize we were on the high side of the field. So didnt notice the drop off into the drainage ditch..until it was too late. Since it was too late too stop i put the hammer down on the ole 340 and gaver all she had. I felt my buddy grab on tight....But with two guys on it just wasn't enough to shoot the 6'-8' wide and probably around 6' deep gap.

The sled slammed into the other side of the drainage ditch and so did we! Fortunately the snow drifted to that side and we had some what of a soft landing and only suffered bruises to our shins. The sled however wasnt so lucky. Windshield and hood were now all busted up and the chassis and handle bars got pretty tweeked.

We got the sled running again and got it out of the ditch. Then saw a buddy driving by who we flagged down. Threw the sled in the back of the truck and brought it home with our tails between our legs. We then thought of a good story (that didnt sound as bad as hitting a field drainage ditch)...

:D to tell the parents of how the sled got wrecked

Paul, I didn't think that Cougar could go that slow, especially with your nos and turbo kit. Besides, the only Polaris Indy you might catch would be a Indy Starlight with a 244cc single cylinder and my grandma driving it. HAHAHAHA

Back in my wilder days, me and my buddies were racing through the hilly curvy trails in northern Minnesota when the traffic was much lighter than it is these days. I was driving my '86 Ski-Doo Formula MX, my buddies were driving Yamaha Exciter L/C's, Indy's, and V-Maxes of the time. It was after dark and we were going to race from point A to point B(about 5-7 miles). We liked to run hard at night so we could see headlights coming the other direction. Well, I had a smaller displacement sled than my buddies but I was somehow able to pass them and take the lead. I was feeling pretty proud until I came fast into a corner that turned to the right but I thought turned to the left. Let's just say that northern Minnesota has a lot of trees. The sled rolled several times, bent the tunnel, ripped off the track, and the hood was found up in a tree. I was found OK but shaken under about 3 feet of snow. Those were the days...........
