Headgasket??? 78 Liquifire.........

Post by deerefanatic »

Ok, I think I know what happened.......

I rebuilt (Ok, resealed and replaced wrist pin clips and bearings and little other stuff.) both of the engines a couple years back.. Now, fast forward, the 78 is melted down...... And now I'm just riding my 77..... Rode it this winter earlier and it seemed to run out of steam around 7000 rpms. And was boggy mid throttle.... So I open her up, kill it and check plugs..... NEARLY WHITE!!! And that's with stock jet settings on freshly cleaned carbs, new premium gas, and a 33F day....... So I call the local Motorcycle mechanic I know to pick his brain.... He asked me how my timing was...... I said "Should be good, I did it when I did the engines a couple years ago." He tells me check it again to be sure..... So I borrow a buddies really nice Suntune Timing light and set to checking it out today......

To make a long story short, my timing was between 3 - 8 degrees advanced!!!!

:o Looks like I just wasnt careful enough when I set it last time. LESSON LEARNED!!!!!!!

When it comes to timing, "Close enough" is NOT close enough..... I can only assume I did the same with my 78 when I put it together......

As a side note, after doing the timing today, the 77 idles much smoother and also ran better all around......

OH, and as a side note, plug color is now a light coffee color on the pto side and tan on the mag side. (Not sure why the mag side always seems lighter in color on both my JD's.. And no, I don't think it's the fuel pump either as it was rebuilt not long ago.......)
