Aluminum engine parts cleaning

Post by Bulldog »

I'm starting on the restoration or my 74 300 and was wondering the best way to clean up aluminum parts on the motor. I'm completly disassembling the engine and rebuilding. Thanks,
Greg

I always start off with smiple green and a brush and warm water to start the cleaning process. Works great on rims and blocks on old cars to.

Hello
I read your post. Am in agreement with Simple Green and a scrub brush.
Here's another suggestion. I like a mixture of Tri Sodium Phosphate (TSP) car wash soap and water.
Soak the parts and scrub well with a nylon brush. Rinse well and polish with Autosol.

I just use water, and likea wet old rag.. sand paper is really good at cleaning all the carbon off of the pistons. and its also good at getting those old stuck on gaskets off...

To to my first initial clean ups on the motor i use wd40 , a lot of rags and a scothbrite pad .It gives you a good indication of what youre dealing with and it will also cut the grease really well. I've got a collection small brushes that help get into all of the nooks and difficult areas.

Just put on some good music and clean away...

That's right Don!

When you get past the grease and you are facing aluminum oxide (tarnish on aluminum) get a bottle of ETCHING mag cleaner and use per directions. Etching mag cleaner is an acid, and it does work very well.
