Eltigre 6000 ?

Post by 80_liquifire »

Have a 1978 eltigre 6000 440 LC, starts up runs for about 7-11 minutes .

Then all od sudden just quits , pulled plugs no spark showing. Has a new external coil , before it does this it idles but has some intermitten rpm fluctuation.

Tested charging coil , manual says 200 ohm's + 10% cold it reads 163 ohms after it stalls it reads 196 ohms or so .

Wondering if the charging coil is bad or possible CDI , seems when I tapped on the CDI at one time spark returned . ( coincidence ? )

Any thoughts

we had a polaris fugi motor with similar problem. found out that once the motor run enough to heat up the charging coil was shorting out. took a week or two to find the problem but when we did it was solved. i hope that maybe this helps.

Thanks,
that is what I am going to try first . The ohms seem under specs .

Fortunately the box of parts that came with the sled has a lighting coil and charging coil in it , NOS parts .

I got it broke down to the flywheel , just need to get longer bolts for the puller to pull it off . I'll see tomorrow hopefully .

Got around to putting in a new chrging coil , still did not solve the shut down . Pretty sure the CDI is gone.

Since I was in there , I decided to install a new lighting coil also. The lights worked fine before ,thought I would swap out the old one .

NOW the lights and Tach do not work

B)

Was wondering do the lighting coils have a positve and negative wire , thinking I could have mixed the 2 wires up . ??

Lighting coils... one wire goes to ground and the other is hot and runs everything.
The electrical system is AC not DC so there is no pos/neg.

Only sleds with electric start have DC and then that is only for the curcuit to charge the battery. The lights ect are still running AC.

As for the lose of spark check the throttle position saftey switch. Can be a tricky adjustment.

Ok ,
I swapped the 2 wires around coming from the lighting coil with jumper wires .

It does matter what wires are hooked up , I apparently mixed them up when soldering in the new lighting coil , everything works with the jumper wires .

Thnx again

I have a 1981 el Tigre 6000 with the 500cc Suzuki motor that has the exaxt same problem. It will run from a cold start for about 5 min. then the spark cuts out. I have asked a lot of people what to do, some say the external coils, some say the internal coils. I am trying to pin it down before I tear into it. Please let me know what you find out. Thanks.

Throttle saftey switch. As the motor warms up heat is transfered to the throttle cable and the cable expands in length just enough to open the saftey switch and kill the cdi. Fix is simply to take a turn of slack out of the cable with the barrel nuts on the carbs.
If the rpm increases then turn the throttle stop screws out half a turn. Cat started this system in 73 and it was not that tricking with a single carb but with two it can be a pain.

The throttle safety switch has been bypassed by the previous owner . I know for sure that is not the problem on this sled.

Work done so far , changed in a new external coil ,did not solve .

Swapped in NOS internal charging coil and lighting coil , since I was in there . not solved.

Think I have it pinned down to the CDI . When the sled warms up like said it shuts down .

Pulled the plugs and no spark , tap on CDI spark comes back . At times after the sled sat overnight , spark returned .

I'll post up after , waiting for the UPS brown truck to bring a new CDI

Update ,

got around to installing the new CDI . Solved the problem on this sled , wish I tried this part the first time .
But for the price of a CDI its always the one you dont want it to be. Bought a SPI brand , dont know much about the brand , but hope it will last.

Just need to tune it in and some snow around here to take it out for a ride.

Thanks for the update. I have been waiting to see how things went. I will assume the coils on mine are ok and replace the CDI. That will be a much easier fix.
