In Fall of 1974 when my Dad and Mom were purchasing a new 1975 JDX8 to go with our JDX4 Special from the year before. I was 10 years old and very excited at my Dad wanting to buy this Top Dog JD sled.
While my Dad was in the sales office making the deal my Mom and I were strolling around the show room. She noticed this poem that was mounted on wood for sale amongst other accessories. My Mom loved it and picked it up and walked into the sales office and said " Willie have you made a deal yet ?" He said "Yeah kinda."
Mom replied back "No deal unless this is thrown in with it" .
My Dad said " We are already getting this" and held up the Big John record. I was wowed beyond anything !
Well the new JDX8 came home in the back of the of our 1973 Ford truck and the small poem on my Mom's lap and the Big John record on my lap. All 3 of of us with big smiles on our faces.
My Mom and Dad have since both passed away and I have been going through stored items looking for old mementos.
Well while looking for other things I found the old poem mounted on wood. I am quite sure it is no original John Deere piece, but it brought back many thoughts of my Mom and Dad when we all went snowmobiling together as a family.
And yes I still have that Big John album.
Remember that every little thing you do with your kids is creating a memory for them of the time spent with you. Be sure they are all great ones.
Here is a picture of the poem mounted on wood and I typed out the poem itself. It is pretty cool....PLEASE READ !
Enjoy Dave
The Strange Creature
There?s a new type of creature emerging on earth, I?ll describe him to you for whatever it?s worth. He comes out of hiding in winter I?m told, he rejoices in weather that is terribly cold.
He leaves the warm fireside, his wife and his kids, climbs onto a motor, a belt and two skis. The machine comes to life, he is ready to go, But he can?t cause as yet there isn?t any SNOW.
For the past eighteen days he?s been wearing a suit, That is covered in zippers from parka to boot. And mittens, and helmet, and mask on his head, ?My God?, says his wife, ?must you wear it to bed??
Then it finally happens the ground turned white, he?s out on his machine and he roars out of sight. On the flat he?ll crouch, on the corner he?ll lean, and they tell me his blood is pure gasoline.
Over hill, over river, through marsh and ?round trees, over rock pile and sand pit, yet down on his knees! He looks like he?s praying as onward he flies.
Is it Monster or Man? All we see are his eyes.
He?ll go charging ahead when it?s twenty below, screaming into a blizzard of on rushing snow. By what demon possessed is this new breed of man, who finds joy in snowstorm like no human can?
But what happens in summer when snows aren?t there? Is he out on the porch in an old rocking chair?
NO! He is inside the house for the whole world to see???Sitting there on his SNOWMOBILE watching TV !

Very nice Dave. Thanks for sharing the memories of your folks and early love of Deere sleds.
Personally, I blame my grandfathers brother "Uncle Joe" for my Deere affliction. Somewhere I bet he looked down at my barn and think "Got enough of em yet?!" Funny, now that I am "Uncle Joe" to 7 nieces and newfews. And, like a good uncle I've been buying sleds for kids...

I too had an "Uncle Joe". His name wasn't Joe though. It was Uncle Babe (Wilfred really, but we all called him Babe). He bought a brand new 440 Cyclone in '76 or '77, brought it home in the crate and put it together. He only lived a few miles away, and he used to come over with it and give us rides and drag us around on inner tubes and toboggans and such. Two or three of his brothers always had Deere sleds as well. Anyway, my point is that I was just thinking that it's funny how similar some of our stories are. My Deere pride is pretty much Uncle induced as well.
