Strange Carb found

Post by JDT »

Pulled a 1974 JDX4 Special into the shop today and found a Tilletson Carb under the shroud. If that is not strange enough this Tilly has a return line. Never seen that before!
Number is HD-40B. Anyone have any input on this? Thanks, Todd

a 74 X4 special should have a bendix carb. carb kits are hard to come by so I suppose they put a tilly on it. Not familiar with the tillys much but the walbro as used on many deeres did use a return line.

Ok so I just saw another of these weird Tilly's.
On a JD 400 ebay item # 260202635156.
Not the return line....
Still wondering what the 40B was used on originaly.

I have 2 deeres with tillys 1 came with and the other I threw on to get the sled running. They actually work about the same as the walbro but you cant hook the choke up. I have had my hands on atleast 100 tillitsons over the years and probably 8 out of 10 do have a return. Seems to me the no return carbs are most common on the smaller hr series carbs and on hds used on 1 lungers also most of them without the return have a plug where the return fitting could screw in. Not positive but thinking a 40b may be a ski doo or cat carb.

Is your carb a HD-40B? Do you know where it came from?
Thanks, Todd
