Salsbury clutch conversion

Post by S_Kyle »

I got my Hurricane going, it has a salsbury 910 primary clutch. The clutch is in really bad shape and I need a second sled for my sister to ride for the relic run. I know deere used the 100c as a replacement for the slabury 910.

I have a real good 100c in my basement and I was wondering if it would be a bad Idea to use this clutch on my merc. I have been told that it will and that it wont work because of the power curve on the 644 would be differnet. So any advice would be appreciated.

put it on see how it works and make adjustments if needed if the belt width is right it will likely be acceptable the way it is
Good luck

Well rebuilding that clutch is out of the question now. I left it a friends house he was tinkering with and took it for a run, he made it a couple laps around the house and pieces started to breaking off the clutch. I hope to try the new clutch this weekend.

Sorry for the confusion, the original salsbury clutch came apart wile running. I was planning on using a comet 100c I have in my basement until I could get a rebuild kit for a 644. Now I have to remove whats left of the original and install the comet 100c for the upcoming relic run. I got lucky though my cousin had the primary fail on his 600 mountain max at full throttle a few weeks ago. Pieces destroyed his hood and belly pan and he has a big repair bill now.

I have always been told you need a proper clutch puller to remove a primary. Now that there is no point in being gentle can I use a 3 jaw puller to remove it? I can't seem to find anyone with a salsbury puller.

Use caution with the 3-jaw as it contacts the end on the crankshaft.
If the screw of the puller mars up the threads on the crank you will have a bigger problem.

I better make a few calls and find a puller, I can't risk missing up the crank after the battle I have had with this thing.

A Arctic Cat HEX Clutch puller works on many Salibury clutchs also but I can not say for sure about this one. But they are very common and you should be able to find one to try.

Finally got the merc all back together. The comet clutch works great but there is massive electrical problems. Looks like I have another summer project.

All of the wires are frayed to the point that we broke two trying to tape them up, I had the motor out of it yesterday because the previous owner had used a stripped screw on the bottom of the recoil housing. Now the lights are out and the ignition won't start the starter. It was getting late yesterday so I jumped the starter with booster cables and took it for a quick ride. The whole sled will have to be rewired as there are extra wires that go nowhere and the ones that do serve purpose are so frayed that they cant be repaired.

One last thing before I go, I have both coils and a CDI. Was this system used on any other sleds? I have had just about enough surprises from this thing.
