did they just change the heads for more compression and more agresive jetting to get more h/p on the sportfires than on the trails

There is more to it than that. The bottom end is where all the differences are at. The sport has a beefier crank than the trail.

Then where do they get the extra H/P from cause a beefer crank isnt going to make mere power heavier crank will give more ineritia there has to be more compression or more flow in the engine the pipes and the intakes look the same and the same size carb

The cyclinders are differnt than the trails.

They also had differnt carb. They had a PJ on the sport.

shorter deck height or diffrent piston? more compression?

They used the same piston. Differnt jugs, differnt base, bigger crank, bigger main bearings, differnt intake, differnt head, bigger carb with PJ. These all add up to the 8 more HP. just a little of everything makes an improvement.
