What are the proper plugs for my 80LF? Got this sled from my brother in-law and he has 3 different sets of sparkplugs. Anybody no what size I should be using?

Look at the SPECS section and you will find a list of plugs for your machine.

I've bought NGK BR9ES and BR7ES plugs for mine, the 7's being a hotter plug.

You will be safe with BR9ES I would never run 7s....

So whats wrong with 7`s. You seen it comin. 7`s seem to work great in my Sportfire. Countless miles, no problems.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with 7s if you know how to read plugs and learn what the set up of your individual machine is. One guy might not need 7s, while another might, guy A might live at 215 above sea level while guy B might be at 4000'. Saying that they should have the same setup is silly. Plug heat ranges are a good way to fine tune a machine, but of course like anything, don't do it blindly, you are your own warranty station. :rolleyes:

I would run 8 or 9s Ive never come across 7s in anything other than a yamaha personally. I do agree they could be the right setup for a given individual who is good at tuning and has the knowledge but if your [notasledguy] I would stay away from them for now atleast.

I know a little about reading plugs and pistons. I would never even consider running a 7 in a liquid cooled sled or using it as a "tuning tool". Guys, be careful when asking advice on the internet. There is a lot of good stuff out there and a lot of not so good stuff. Peter

Well I have used NGK BR9ES in my 80 LF for as long as I can remember with no problems here in IA. The only reason why is that the Champion plugs seemed to foul more in the past. I think the NGK seem to perform better under these smaller faster running two strokes.........that's my 2 cents worth.

some interesting points here, the factory tuning may not be ideal for all locations. obviously a sled running at 4000 feet will not be tuned the same as one running at sea level. factory tuning is a good baseline that is probably conservative and will get you in the ballpark. over a variety of conditions.
jetting can be optimized
ignition timing can be optimized, bear in mind that if you change brands / stations/ locations/ octane/ quality, of your fuel, your optimal ignition timing will also change.
spark plugs are not the correct way to tune for a lean/rich condition. jetting is.

i have seen hotter plugs installed in a tired motor with lots of blowby, as a quick fix to prevent fouling.

Thanks for all your replies! When I cross referenced the QN-2/ N-2 on the NGK website it gave me B8's seeing as you guy's were stating the smaller the # the hotter the plug, I went with 9's to be safe. I ran it yesterday for about 45 minutes after rejetting the carbs to the 81 spec's Rich had given and cleaning the carbs out after soaking them for 24 hours as I had learned on this sight and finally picked up an AIRBOX for it and installed it. MAN OH MAN I would have never imagined it was going to run this good or would of finished doing everything in the summer. Thanks again everyone I really appreciate all your info. Ready to plan a trip to my brothers up in Gaylord,Mi. so I can put some miles on finally. Thanks again!

Tom. NGK BR9ES is a very good choice of plug to run in your sled.
