Indy 400 Help

Post by Deleted User »

Hi there,

Was hoping to get some thoughts on what might be causing my 1988 Indy 400 to shake really bad when it hits 35 mph. I'm really not good at troubleshooting where the root cause might be so was hoping to see if anyone else had encountered anything similar. Basically the hood and handle bars shake/vibrate bad when i'm giving it gas at about 35.

- I also have a 1983 Trailfire LX (love it).

TIA!

Clutch component sticking, drive shaft bearing bad, jackshaft bearing bad, broken track driver, track hitting tunnle or bulkhead.
Could be a lot of things.
Get the sled inside and prop up the rear and start looking. Grab the shafts and try to wiggle them. Rotate the track by hand and carefully look at it.

dglood.......all the things that Todd mentioned are possible causes of the symptom you describe. But never overlook the obvious. Remove your drive belt and look it over closely to see if there's a narrow spot worn in it. This will make your sled shake like mad. Even a slight wear spot in the belt will cause noticable vibration. Also, have you hit any trail obstacles with the sled lately? If so, you may have a bent track driveshaft.

Thanks for all the input. I'll check that tomorrow as we were dumped on with snow Wed here in Northern IL. I wouldn't expect it to be the jack shaft as my relative that sold it to me just had that replaced about 200 miles ago. I do know that the belt we put on there a couple years ago was the spare and I'm sure it was already very old. I hope that's all it is as it all of a sudden started happening and it really rides great up until 35.

Thanks again for the responses!
