Okay, I just fininshed installing a fresh rebuilt motor, cleaned the carb and my brother and I painfully installed the rear suspension. I set the high and low needle jets to the correct spec (1 1/4 - 1 1/2 turn out from fully closed) and took it for a spin. When I stopped the first time the motor idled down so I adjusted the idle up, but after stopping the second time the motor idled too high so once again I adjusted the idle. I did this several times and then remembered an earlier thread where someone had a similar issue and the problem was an air leak around the throttle butterfly shaft so I wiggled the shaft and it had play from side to side (approx .06" from side to side). When I moved the shaft in, the engine would idle up and moved out, the idle would come down. I looked on Central Snowmobile and did a search for a Bendix rebuild kit online and found nothing. Does anyone else out there have or know where I could find a kit to repair this problem? Also, does anyone know how to remove the shaft? My repair manual says the shaft has a screw staked in place that holds it together, but it doesn't look to me that this is the case and the diagram I have doesn't show this part of the carb. Any diagram anyone might have would also be very helpful.
Thanks

If you find a place that stocks kits let me know I buddy has been looking for a couple kits for a wile now. He has more or less quit looking because he was tired of getting laughed at when we go to shops and dealerships.

As a last resort I was thinking on putting a Mukuni slide on, anyone ever done this? If so, what size carb should I use, main jet size, pilot jet size and needle jet should be used?

Theres always been people posting about no kits avail for the bendix. T avoid the hassle of the mik swap why dont you just run a walbro from a similar deere that way you can use the choke and throttle cables from any 00 x sled as well as the intake tube if you like. Is this an x4 or x4 special I thought only the specials came with the bendix my 74 x4 has a walbro but I have a x4 special motor and it has the bendix.

A Tilletson Carb is a good choice to replace the Bendix also.
You do not have to replace the cables as you would with a Mikuni update.

That's probably what I'll do...now I'll have to find one of those. My plan was to keep it all original as it is in very good condition.JDFanPa wrote: Theres always been people posting about no kits avail for the bendix. My '74 X4 is a special, correct me if I'm wrong but Deere did not make a regular X4 in '74. That being said, all X4's in '74 would've been a special and had Bendix carbs...????

Yes Jason you are right on about this I actually have four x4s and often end up confusing the years actually alot of the sleds listed in my signature have duplicate parts sleds and I get the years mixed up often. Good news on the walbro swap is your motor is the same as in the 400s except the 72 model so a carb and stuff from 1 of them would bolt right on and heck the settings would even be real close.jd ike wrote:

Like Todd stated a tillitson is a good carb also if you want to go non deere and you can always hang on to your bendix in hopes you find 1 of the golden kits for them. If you really want to stick to the bendix I would be willing to sell you the 1 i have for pretty cheap since I have no intentions on using it but I would have to check the condition.

I removed the shaft and added a rubber washer between the carb housing and end of the shaft. This took up any slack in the system and hopefully helped seal the air leak. I will run it this weekend and post the results.
