Burn't piston on 1980 LF?
Burn't piston on 1980 LF?
1980 440 LF. I burnt a piston on the clutch side, the cylinder is also scored pretty bad. I have a half tore down engine still good out of a 1981 440 LF are the pistons and cylinders the same? How hard is it to remove and replace a piston on one of these? I have replaced pistons on Polaris fuji 488cc it was fairly easy the piston wrist pin was full floating, are the piston wrist pins on these Kawi 440's full floating? Is it really necessary to get the official JD top end gaskets or will the ones from Dennis Kirk be ok? If it is best to get the JD gaskets where do I get them?

The parts from your 81 will fit the 80.
NOS JD gaskets work the best and youll get the best results. You can get the NOS top end gasket sets from MN Vintage Snowmobile for around $20. You will still need the crank seals if youre planning on doing a full rebuild which you can get from Central Snowmobile.
I've rebuilt a few 80's LF motors and never had any issues removing the wrist pins. All seemed to come out fairly easy.
Good Luck!
