I'm sure this has been discussed, maybe on the old board software, but since the search isn't working I'll ask the question.
First, a little background - I have been refurbishing my dad's original one owner 1973 JDX4. I have to put a new clutch on, new condensers, new drive sprockets and chain. The drive sprockets and chain came from a parts sled a '73 or '74 JD300 that I picked up for $50 off eBay and picked up about 1 hour from here.
The parts sled was complete when I got it and now it is only missing the drive sprockets, which I think I've located from another forum member. I could probably get it running with the 295 Kohler, and probably will, but I would like to explore engine swap possibilities. I used to ride my Grandpa's JDX8 and it was pretty fast and I would just ride that but my uncle has it stuck somewhere in his barn. And the engine is stuck.
So what is involved with swapping a 440 fan of some type into a sled that had a 295 Kohler in it? Will any 440 work or does it have to been from a mid-engine sled? The easiest swap would be the CCW 440, but what about the Kioritz or other brands?
Would I also have to change the secondary clutch and any of the drive sprockets?
Thanks,
Dave Flaherty

Engine swaps - what 440 will fit my JD300
It seems like all arely JD sleds were nearly identical except for their engine and muffler; gas tank secondary, chaincase. I'm pretty sure that every tunnel was also the same, just with a different stamp for each model. Therefore, you should be able to put any early engine in there: kec 340, kec 440, kec 440/21, kec 440/22, kec 400/22, kec 340/22, and possibly the kec 340-440/22a with cdi boxes. I know however, that most of these engine wont fit in 1972 models as the green bar by the engine has a smaller indent near the fan shroud and will only take the smaller fan engines such as all kec 340s and the first kec 440. Part of the bar in my 72 500 is cut as my uncle tried to put a 440/21 in there. The formentioned engines should bolt right in and the secondary and drive sprockets should also be good, but you might need a different muffler.

I have a '74 300 with a 340/5 CCW ( X300 now ) in it out of a '74 X4. The easiest plan is to transplant the engine, exhaust, and chaincase complete. As mentioned previously, the bar that the dash mounts to was brought over from the X4 as well ( required ).
BTW, CCW and Kiortiz engines are the same animal.

I just put a 440 in my 1972 JD 400, but I did cut the fan shroud in the area it was hitting and eliminated one of the bolts that was in the way that was holding the shroud on
