Interesting Chat at my Local JD Dealer

Post by hamzam »

I have a JD dealer which is a Polaris/Yamaha dealer also ,about 30 miles from me and when I asked if they would check my Liqufire over at the begining of winter they said, ''you have a what.....'', I said a JD Liquifire '', they said sorry it's not worth our time and didn't want to even talk about it even though they fix and repair/sell sleds....end of story...Compared to these new sleds this old one should be a cinch to work on but no luck. And speaking of JD sled parts I needed a couple of clips that holds my tailight on my Polaris Trailblazer I gave the parts guy a Polaris part num and when I got the clips they where in a JD sealed plastic bag with it's own part num which they had on hand. How many other parts on my atv have JD part numbers ..I wonder. Them clips probably fit on mowers tractors etc.
I just thouht it was odd.

Since I'm not located in what is considered the snow belt most of the parts guys around here don't even know that Deere made snowmobiles. They are surprised and ask questions when you do inquire about something. Twice I gave them a part number and they found parts for me at dealers in MI. and MN.

In the late 80's and early 90's I was into antique JD tractors. Dad had a 830 electric start diesel with a Crenlo steel cab and I had a '51 R diesel. If we went to Deere for parts they found most of them from DPN (Dealer Parts Network). I was told by the parts counter that Deere sold old and outdated inventories to them. Would it be possible that DPN also bought sled part inventories?

DPN is a place where Deere Dealers could send there unwanted obsolete parts & would get like $.10 on the dollar for them, (most Dealers quickly figured out that they could get more money scraping the heavy or cast parts) so yes DPN did/does have a few sled parts, BUT as Greg can confirm they are very very expensive & have been picked over for there race parts years ago ( I paid over $1200.00 including shipping for a NOS older liquifire bare unnumbered painted tunnel) last I knew they still had a NOS Spitfire tunnel for $900.00+... Also you have to be one of there participating dealers to order parts from them...
But you can go online at http://www.depotparts.com/asporders/login.aspx & ck availability of part numbers as a visitor.
I have been very fortunate to still have available to me the same Parts Manager (Larry) at the same JD dealership Sharber & Sons in Rogers MN, where I got my race sled through back in the 70's & so he is still willing to take the time to look through the JD parts locater system for any part numbers I wish to look for & to see if there might have been a superseded part numbers over the years or if they are still used on maybe a mower or some other piece of Deere equipment..
Back in the 77-78 race season he even set it up with the MPLS Branch Whse Manger so I could go to Deeres MPLS Parts whse & have someone pull all the AM54366 Cross Country tracks they had in stock ( I think there was about 20 or more ) & we weighted all of them to find the lightest track for my CC Liquifire..
