HOF Ride with the Champs: 2009

Hi Guys,

I tried to call the HOF today, as I want to ask Loren about the RWC for 2009. The NY guys already decided we need to go vintage next year. This is was part brought on by the fact we felt odd leaving our fellow jdsleds crew behind for the fast ride to the UP.

For the RWC: 2009 Lindner has brought up trying to as many Deere race sleds to show up as we can, and we are game for it. Freatman wants to bring a 295/s or a CC Cat, but we will let him come anyway. I think Brian might have sparked the rebuild of more Deere racers in 2008 than ever before!

I also think it was Jon Carlson who brought up trying to make it to the UP on vintage sleds, much like the "Fast (as hell) Ride" our group did. It's 75 miles up to the lunch location at Fishtails. I think this would be an awsome idea, but its a big risky. A few things that might lower that timing risk include leaving right from Breakfast, or immediately after it from the HOF.

Friday night we were riding back from Eagel River to St. Germain with Tim, Nick and I on late model Cat's. We also had Greg, "The International Trailfire Terrorist" with us on the Felon-fire. I was leading a pretty quick pace, and Greg hung in there with us. He admitted he was riding hard, but could keep up due to excellent grooming of the trails.

So, "IF" Loren is up for it, I am going to request a "Fast Ride" and a regular ride for the vintage guys. For us to make it, we are probably going to have to have our Deere's in top shape, with freash chassis bearings, crank seals, clutches aligned and rebuilt, good carbides and maybe a few studs with some good luck and tow sleds just in case.

I am up for the challange, but we are also planning to bring a few spare sleds for a Friday night shake down run. What do you guys think?

Should I lose the upcoming election, there's no doubt I'm there on the 340/S (and a reconditioned body) that will be ready for either ride. Should I win I'd have to know our meeting date for February. Thanks for contacting Loren. I think we've really started something with this "vintage racer ride". Once everyone hears about it though we'd better expect vintage racers from other brands as well. Man I'm stoked!!!!!!!!!! Let's load up.....DA

how fast is the vintage run?

I didn't look at the speedo much. But on the way back from lunch, we were running a bit harder than on the way in I think, 25 - 35 mph I would guess.
Faster on the straights, ( of which I don't remember many ) then out on the few lake crossings we would open them up a bit, 50+.

Is that how you remember it Don?

I was running about as hard as I could on the X8 without being real concerned about putting it in the trees. Remember that is with a cleated track with no picks.

Grant, are you referring to this years "vintage ride"? Most of the time we were cruising around 40 mph, faster on the lakes, slower when traffic demanded it. It was much faster than I imagined it would have been but very very tolerable. DA

Hi Don,

yep, that's what I meant. I was just wondering how I would fare on a ride like that.

The more gung ho/faster guys ride at the front, the slower sleds toward the back.
The trail boss stops now and then to re-group the formation.

KWC's 300 was running in our group.

Thanks, Brian. That's kind of what I was wondering. I'm not sure if my 300 could do 40 mph on trail conditions. JDX-8 could, though.

Hey Guys,

Just got off the phone with Loren at the HOF. He is totally OK with offering a "Fast Vintage Ride" and a regular vintage ride as long as enough guys sign up to support two groups.

Sound like we need to get our fellow JD riders on board, and try to convince Horicon Joe's crew to join us next year.

Got to go, I've got some work to do on a 340/s!

Geeeeeee............. I am bummed out.............I was thinking about riding with you JD Race sled guys at the next HOF. Too bad for me.....guess I am not qualified by Brians prior post. Only have an 80LF with a few picks and 5 inches of NOS carbide. Not a race sled by definition, probably couldn?t keep up. Hey Danzig, maybe you & I could go on our own slow ride.....or bring a couple of aging IFS Cats. Mine is a reasonably good running 550, with aftermarket roller secondary, decent size carbides, a fair amount of picks, it rolls along pretty good by my standards, short of 100 mph by its speedo but better than 95. Not sure of the accurate speed. Not a bunch of time to be looking at speedo when creeping along at those slow speeds in relation to the real race sleds. Maybe they would spot us a half hour head start on the old Cats or 80LF?s???? But then if Duane brings a Polaris, we are both in trouble again, make that an hour or so head start. LOL.

Guy you are killing me!

The trails we vintage guys were running on were as crooked as a snake.
I was not prepared for that, I thought we had crooked trails here, HA!
We have a super speedway here!

I was getting spanked, as there was a '67 Panther up ahead of Don and I, and he had a single lunger in it! The bad part was that he was staying ahead of us fine as long as we were in the woods. Now when we hit the lake......

Great post guys............we have all types of trails around here. The guys that ran the faster run up to Fishtales for lunch on Lake Gogibic had some good long lake runs and UP logging runs.

There are plenty of slower trails with scenic stuff and curves between here and Minocqua where the slower guys can run. Actually, with four groups leaving after breakfast, there is a group for all riders.

The only thing is the older sleds will require someone able to pick up sleds, debris and parts along the way should that be necessary ! ! (or bring a lot of tow ropes guys) That means a truck and trailer needs to be on call. That is how it used to be back in the early 80's when we started this great event.

One year, we had 7 sleds (out of 45) on trailers after the trip to the big lake and lunch at Fishermans as it was called back then.

More and more of you guys see why it is called the most fun ride any one could ever be a part of..........and what neat friends you meet year after year.

Rich: I agree that #15 would look good on the hood.........but the pilot would be a long, l-o-n-g ways from a Stan Hayes. He could make most anything look good.

Just squeeze the throttle Guy, I am just guessing but I think our Liquifire's can hold there own against these sleds.
