This is very cool Ed.
I would think Chuck Moser would be particularly interested in this, as I believe he has one of those prototype motors. I believe he wanted to put it in a 340S chassis and re-create that sled!

Hi Ed,
Once again, a very sweet picture! The only other photo I've seen was from Race and Rally with a caption something like "Deere showed up with an expermental Liquid Cooled sled" at a Cross Country race. That pic showed a huge hood scoup. Was that for a radiator aside from the under seat heat exchanger shown?
Thanks for posting!

PS: I got my "SnoGoer" reprint featuring all the Deere articals. Very, very cool info.

The exp. liq. sled that was raced in Park Papids was a compleatly different sled that was built out of the marketing section of our plant. the one showen is a proto built in eng. test shop and tested. No raditaor.

Were the prototype liquid cooled engines of the same design in the 2 sleds?

Brian; I don't know. I stoped by Jack Hoffman today and we think that race sled was built much later. I will try to contact Mark Schemada as he was the one who helped build and drive the sled in Park Rapids for more info. Some how I misplaced the pic of Mosers eng. The pic is the first liq. test sled with chapperal cooling sys.

Disreguard my last two posts. (old age) Contacted Mark, the one driving in the picture at Park Rapids on the 340s proto. with the big hood scoop. We built two proto liquids to race. one was with a radiator the other heat exc, the one I am standing by. We were testing these in northern Wis when a test trip came up and I shipped to Alaska to test other production snowmobiles. When we were gone Sam Greshay and Mark smedema raced these two in Park Rapids in the exp. class. Sam placed 1st and Mark 5th. Both eng. where Kioritz 340cc Mark has no pictures and have been unable to contact Sam. Both sleds were build in eng. test section. Your very first LIQUIFIRES ED

Just in case some of you do not have this picture here it is. I would go further and say that these are the first proto DATORS. Not Liquifires.

That is taken from Deere's race tips.
However; I have a copy of the International Cross Country Snowmobile Federation race rules and regulations from '77-'78.
It states: The head, stop, and tail light must be working at the start line.
No mention of while racing. Go get em Don, give em hell!

I find this post very interesting. Looking at the first picture you notice the prototype motor on the table. Same style motor that i have . I will be in contact with Mark Smedema or anybody else that knows something about the 340/s prototype Dator. Looking for ideas as to who has the knowledge.
This project will be started hopefully in the next few weeks.
This prototype motor is NOS and will be placed in a 340/s. As the folks that know me understand that everthing i have will be run and driven. This sled will be NO exception. Cant wait to get this thing running as it was ment to be. Getting tired of looking at it on the shelf. Wonder what horsepower this will produce.
Grass drags or Ice drags ????????????

Sounds great Kenny. Perhaps up at your cabin this summer. Good hayfields up there.
Guys....... Look at the pic of Mark on the proto..Zoom in .. There is a slight glare on the headlight side. Looks like the light was moved forward under the scoop and perhaps squared like the Dators and Liquifires.. ???? Really need more info or can anybody see anything else on these 2 pics???
