raccoon in the attic
I have a raccoon in my attic and was wondering if anyone had any experience with removing them?
I would even take help from Rainville if he had any ideas.

You could do like we do to catch them alive to train the dogs..You take about 5-6 nail and drive the nail at an angle,, put some food down inside the hole of the tree and they will grab the food and won't let go to pull their paw back out of the hole..(lol) But in your case..Live trap will work just fine!!!!!

Get yourself a live trap and put it up there. Shooting it would be messy and it does pose the possiblity of adding some new entrys for the other critters that would like to move in.

.22 caliber rifle and let it rip!! We used to go hunting coons in corncribs at night around here. Not a good idea, you have to climb up a ladder and then you could end up face to face with one of those mean things in your face, not good.

Place a baited live trap on roof. You will need to find out where they are entering to start with first. Place trap close to this spot.
Can you bread or grapes for bait. Bait it just before dusk near entry/exit point as then will not get a squirrel. They come out looking for food at night.
Should get it .
One other thing Mama coons are usually looking for a nice warm pace this time of year to have litter. The warm fluffy insulation is very nice palce for this new family. After caught go in and check attic for little ones.
Good luck !

I really don't recommend shooting the animal in your attic, the blood will be a real pain to cleanup. Traps and then plugging the whole is the best bet.

hey Liquifire84, you must think i would use the 50 to shoot it. that would leave the biggest hole. i was thinking of throwing some bicks at it and hoping it would leave. from the old coon hunting days, i learned if you throw a strip of fire crackers in its face they move quick and never listen to the old man when he says climb up the tree and shake it to knock them down to train the dogs.
at least you caught it ken.

EHC,
I see good news travels fast. Here I was just removing an 1817 vintage chimney from the 2nd floor of our house, it's the 3rd one I've taken down brick by brick. I have Cari's little cousin Mike for the day to help me out.

So while working away, I take a look behind the chimney to see what collected back there. See pic below!
Knowing these critters are meaner than the Comandant of the Evil Hiens Clan (EHC) when he misses out on cheap Chappy 3-cylinder parts, I jump off the ladder just as the phone rings.
Turns out Comandant Kenny is of little help with the Raccoon, but still wants his Liquifire radiator sent out ASAP. Tossing bricks at them just stirred them up a bit.
Best part was Kenny "The Watersboy" says to trap with the peanut butter with a "Have a Heart" live trap. That was before I discovered there were two of them down there, and emptied the magazine of my 22 semi-auto into them.
I guess some things you have to figure out for yourself. Luckily I live out in the sticks where someone shooting into an open hole in their roof is no cause for alarm...

PS: Anyone need a coonskin hat or two?

ask him about his favorite coon hound charlie, he has some good stories of all most shooting him when the dog climbed the tree after the coon and when he had to kick the coon off the dogs head (the dog went into the river after the coon, very big mistake).

Joe, you are lucky the lead poisoning worked!!!!!!!!You wing one of those buggers and they come after you like a minature bear. I used to go hunting them with some buddies and their dogs. They are some mean mothers. We had two different coons for pets on the farm growing up and if you get them young enough they are pretty fun pets until they get older and then they just dissapear into the wild. They really get into a lot of trouble though. Those little suckers would let themselves out of the cage, then let the rabbits out of their cage, and then get into the house in the middle of the night if you didn't have the doors closed tight. It was pretty funny listenning to mom trying to get that little bugger out of the kitchen tearing up stuff looking for a treat at 2:00 in the morning. Duane

Those raccoons are way to smart for there own good. I had a few run ins with them when I tore down an old house a few yeas ago, not a good idea to sneak up on them. A buddy had to fend one off with a few bricks.
