raccoon in the attic

Post by sdakotajd »

An avid coon hunting friend of mine claims that two brave (insane) souls and a burlap bag can be effective in removing them from an attic. One guy grabs the coon by the tail, lifts it up at arms length and drops it in the bag that is being held by the other guy. He claims that a coon doesn't have enough strength in its tail to reach up and get the hand. Couldn't pay me enough to do either job.

My recommendation: Buy a case of beer and invite your two most gullible (possibly crazy, slow or just plain stupid) friends over to have a few. At the appropriate time, bet them that they can not bag the coon. HAHA.

P.S. Try not to consume so much liquid courage that the racoon rodeo seams inviting. HAHAHA!!!

I have some experience in this matter as well. We have coons in the haymow of the barn all the time, corn cribs, seed corn stack, corn picker, you name it they are everywhere.

I like the .22 method the best, but it requires time.
I have caught them in live traps using molasses on a slice of bread for bait.
It takes a larger trap than I normally see, and the trap may only be good for one or two, depending on how gung-ho to escape they are. They are tough and strong. They WILL destroy a live trap.

Guys,

I too have done the grab the tail trick around my house with woodchucks. It works very well, you corner them, and as they turn around to find a way out, you grab the tail and keep them away from your body. I wasn't going to suggest that to Joe as the coons were wedged between the chimney and his house eyes up!

We don't have ground hogs where I am, just gophers and badgers. That and all the rest of there fury friends, my personal favorites are squirrels. I have an infestation of them in my hunting cabin. I find that 7.62 lead poisoning is a fair to good deterrent, and cheap to.

Must be the week for critters! A couple weeks ago I went out to the barn & the place reeked of cat pee. Set up a live trap & baited it with cat food. So far I've caught a possum, 2 tom cats & 1 very large raccoon. Since I caught the 'coon on Easter I had compassion & let it go in the woods.

Now that the 2 tom cats have joined "the great circle of life" it's amazing how quick the smell has gone away.

About 4 years ago I found a large mama coon laying dead in the yard. I didn't think much of it since we have distemper show up in the coon population on a regular basis. A couple days later I heard a baby coon chattering of in a corner. The thing was tiny so I called a friend that is a coon hunter that also raises them as pets. He came over & got the thing, took it home and started raising it in the house. It wasn't long before they all started to itch. They just thought the thing had fleas until they looked close & found out that the coon was a major tick hatchery. The little ticks were so small they could crawl through the seal on a Tupperware bowl. They had a royal mess getting their house cleaned out.

He didn't seem to want any more coons out of my barn. Go figure.

Raccoons can be funny animals. Some days they will stay hid or run away. Other days they don't seem to care who's around. I still have a red mark on my little finger from where I was playing with a young one when I was a kid. The coon decided to play rough & bit clear through my finger. That hurt, I don't think I told my parents when it happened. I might have been told to leave the coons alone or they would bite me....

Twice in the fall of '06 Pa put the corn picker in gear, only to hear slip clutches going off. Each time I got to cut/pull a raccoon out of the rolls of the head.
They are tough buggers.

A few years ago a guy in my sled club had a big coon under his deck in the back yard. His huge yellow lab was going nuts barking at it out in his cage. So he went out his house into his attached garage and let the dog out of his kennel. The plan was to surprise the coon as he swung the garage door open. It worked. The dog chased it out from the deck and directly into his garage and then into the door he left open to his house!!!! Chased it all over his house destroying everything in their path and finally cornered it behind the TV. He then chased it out with a broom back into the garage and the S.O.B went into the dog coop and met its maker after a short battle with the lab (home field advantage & 130lbs)

Had a family (mother and a few young?ins) move into the bottom of an unused chimney that the cap had blown off . Flue was blocked on the bottom. Tried a lot of stuff (moth balls, pepper spray, bad music). What worked was a strobe light---suspended it down the chimney on a wire and after 20 hours (one night) they were gone. Guess they weren?t the disco types. A pest control guy gave me the tip.

There is a mild racoon infestation in this area - luckily the last two family dogs have been more than capable of dealing with them.

One of the funniest exploits of the previous dog included a coon and a cattle water tank half full. About fifteen years ago, my dad woke up in the middle of the night to hear the dog making an awful racket. He found the dog and the coon looking at each other in twelve inches of water in the cattle tank. With dad on the scene as back up, it was time for action. The dog crossed the water tank and started the fight. All dad could find for a weapon was a two foot 2x8 but he wanted to help the dog. Hitting the coon on the top of the head was ineffective, but a couple of blows across the nose knocked the coon out. At this point the dog took over and shook the coon violently - unfortunately reviving him in the water. This cycle repeated itself a couple of times before dad could knock out the coon and remove it from the tank while keeping the dog away. That dog was a natural with them. If he was barking at a threshing machine, bring the gun. As long as he was barking at the threshing machine, keep looking - there were more to be found. When he lost interest, you could give up. It didn't matter if there were one or five in the machine, he knew. We never trained him, it was all instinct.

A raccoon & a dog/hound in deep water is a dangerous place for the dog/hound as the raccoon will end up on the dogs head & will eventually drown the hound, the best thing is 2 hounds when hunting by water, then the odds are a lot better, I never lost a hound this way but almost did in a bog swamp one night I couldn't get out to the open water to shoot the coon off the hounds head because of the bog & I new the hound was in trouble by the sound of everything, but Charlie made it out ok, but was real weak when he got to me, Now if I would have still had my Raccoon killing Doberman (King) that would never have happened he just hated coon, even after I shot him in the foot one morning about 2:00am while coon hunting, but thats another story!

Another funny one is a few years back the mother-in law called me up because her fireplace had an oder coming out of it & every once in a while she thought that she could hear something behind her when she'd be watching TV, So I went over took the glass off the front of the fireplace (it hadn't been used in years) sure enough a whole bunch of coon poop at the bottom evidently the raccoon wanted to watch TV also, he would climb down the chimney sit on the grate that you would put the wood on & watch the mother-in law, if she started to turn around he'd scurry up the chimney & she wouldn't see him....
Oh yea she live just down the street from us in town.
The best way to get a coon out of a den tree or a chimney is to drop a hundred pack of Black Cats down on there head when they come out they'll clear a tree or chimney by a couple of feet.
We tried artillery simulators on a big old den tree one time but all we got was about 6 feet of flame coming out of the the top of the tree, needless to say we never got those raccoons that we chased in there, I think if we would have their fur probably wouldn't have been any good anyway with all the flame we had coming out of that tree, kind of looked like a big huge mortar tube going off & made one hell of a big boom in the woods, good thing we didn't catch that tree on fire..
