Silver Jubilee Paint
To everyone out there, I did a little research before painting my show winning sportfire. Winter frost was the name of the color when the snowmobiles were built. That name and code died with the snowmobiles. I talked to old JD Dealers in Beaver Dam, Cambellsport, Three engineers One of which is my wife's relative from JD Horicon, and this "Silver Jubilee" paint is the exact match to the winterfrost color. The paint color was reused to paint JD's Silver Jubilee lawn mowers. Now if Horicon Joe would like to take a look and tell me what I painted with this color I will email him my address and he can come over and take a look. The sled is being cleaned in my basement for two upcoming shows.

Calm down dude. Is this paint still available through Deere? When were the silver mowers built? I seem to remember seeing one once...

Sorry, the paint can still be ordered, but it can take 6 to 8 weeks to get it. It has to be manufactured.

Winterfrost I and Winterfrost II? Hmmm? That gets a bit confusing. Would the Winterfrost I be the color on the 1979 Trailfires and II be the color of the 1980 and newer Trail/Sportfire? I had a 79 and I know it was different than the newer ones....it sorta had a hint of brown in the silver.

i wouldent put much stock in what the manufactuers market as original color. most of the subtle differences between colors that originally existed have been combined and cross referenced to eliminate part numbers. for example i did an alice chalmers a couple years ago. i took the dupont paint code for alice chalmers to the body shop supply. when the computer spit out the formula and label it said chrysler hemi orange. about the same time my brother in law was doing an old motoski zepher. the color matched perfect so we painted it. later that winter at a show there was another zephyr identical beside his. i asked the guy what paint he used and he said dupont chevrolet orange. you line that alice up next to a case and you have to look pretty closely to see any difference. my point is that if you have a color that you like and looks pretty close then go with it . if that dude says it looks the same then he's probably telling the truth.

You are correct Pete, the 79 Trailfire's were painted a different color silver (Winterfrost I) then the later models (Winterfrost II). It definitely has a greenish (or mayby brownish) tint. Most people don't even notice.

I own a '87ish silver walk behind mower, bought it new when they first came out. Deere made them well into the '90s, as far as I know they still make silver walk behinds.

qwert, I must say, your replies and comments are always entertaining. You've made me chuckle a few times in the short while I've been following this forum. But, for the record, that Liquifire Black you have will not work on many early Model T's. Henry's classic line, "You can have it any color you want as long as it's black" did not take effect until 1914. From 1909 thru 1913, several colors were available including green, red and grey. By 1914 the production line speed had increased to a point that the colored paints available at the time would not dry fast enough to keep pace with the line. It was then that Ford switched to Japan Black Enamel which, evidently was very fast drying paint. In 1926, choice of colors again became available on the T, thanks to quick drying Duco Lacquer.
I found a couple cans of Blitz Black in my local dealer's bargain bin a couple weeks back for $2.00 a can. I bought them both as it thought it was a real find since I didn't think it had been available for years. Guess it still is. John deere aerosol paint is so nice to work with....the spray pattern is usually very consistent and the nozzles don't seem to clog anywhere near as badly as with most other brands. It can make an amatuer (me) actually think he knows something about painting.

all kidding aside. i have used the primer that john deere sells with excellent results. it seals and surfaces in one coat, goes on very thick and can be block sanded with 320-400 grit to remove all scratches and imperfections. i have run into no compatibility issues with other brands of topcoat and the price cant be beat.
i put an ounce or two of dupont gloss hardener in my topcoat it really brings out the shine.
im glad i posted that comment though, i had no idea the black paint was still available or that you had a choice of colors on the early T's.
is the john deere machinery "harvest"green a close match to the hundred series sleds? how about the liqudator or cyclone?
