Idea's for a trail sled

Post by bob15 »

I am looking to upgrade my trail sled (82 LF), to something a little easier on the back. Any suggestions....

Looking for pre-98, 500 cc or less. Not sure if I want another liquid (anybody make a case for one). Thought about a Polaris Indy Trail 500 F/C with the xtra-10 susp. Was also thinking of the Doos. Any thoughts on a Formula SL (500 fan) or the MXZ440 (fan) with the SC-10 susp. Or would I be better with the liquids. Not really sure which way to turn...could use some help....

thanks...bob

if you want a trail sled, reliable, reliable, i have a 1997 polaris indy trail touring 500 ( 488) has the extra 10 suspension, mine is fan cooled, electric start, reverse
hot grips, its not for sale but this is something you should look for, mine has just 1500miles, my friend has one thats pushing 7000 miles, not a problem
excellent sled for trails, ditches and it wouldnt be horrible in the hills either
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

Take a look at the Ski Doo Safari late 90's or newer with 500 F/C and rides like a Lazy-Boy.

haha mine friend got a new 06 or 07
couple hundred miles, scored pistons, turns out this became a recall, you put it in reverse and it scored the pistons,

i have to say one thing about them, they are fast, and have balls, when they run

I wouldn't hesitate to look at a late '90's Polaris. They made the same sled in so many variations for so many years they had to have had most of the bugs worked out. We had a '97 Polaris Classic 500 and you couldn't break it if you tried. I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of Polaris's but if you buy a 488 liquid or 488 fan, they were just about bulletproof. Also, another upside is that they built a zillion of these so parts are absolutely easy to find, new or used. We had the Xtra-12 in our Classic, but the Xtra-10 would be a nice riding sled as well.

Not a Polaris fan myself but they were pretty good sleds in the 90's. As for doo, a Safari would be a good choice with either the 377 or 503 fan......both bullet proof. A 550 fan or 500/600 liquid ski-doo's were all god sleds from the 90's. A formula sl or 500 would be great. The 440 mxz I would not shy away from either. I have never heard a bad thing about the Phazers either, other than their looks.

Bob15.. I have had a lot of sleds over time,,but I will have to say the 97 polaris super sport was one nice durable sled (488 fan Xtra 10)..My son who is now 27 put this sled in every position possible.. To this day he still misses that sled..Not a speed demon by any standard, but a ball on the trail..And I seen one on the vintage sleds earlier in the week for $800 obo. Had the money I would have been after it..

You can't beat the Polaris 488 Fan or Liquid for reliability. I have had them both--still have a 500 Indy liquid and it runs perfect with the odometer at 7400 and counting. Never used anything other than Plugs. Will also push the sled at 92 mph on the speedo.

Thanks guys for the replies. Think I will be heading in the Indy 500 area. Kept telling myself I wouldn't own another liquid, but I now see another one for in the near future....

Thanks....bob

Well, got 2 actually. One for myself and one for my dad. I found a 97 Indy 500 w/reverse for $660. Couple problems...needed a new gas gauge and the water taken out of the tank and carbs and a new seat cover. My dad also found a 97 Indy 500 for $700 which needs a seat cover as. The Xtra-10 suspension is night and day different that what I have been riding for 20+ years. WOW!!

Mr Deere, I found your message this morning.....
