Clutch Engagement

Post by 440SPORTFIRE »

Hello Friend's, Can some one tell me at what RPM should the clutch on my 1980 sportfire engage? Last winter it came in at 4000 RPM this winter it's about 4400RPM by the tach. I bought the tach new off ebay, is it going bad or is it something else? The belt I am using is a MAX 1078. Thanks

You could have the wrong weights in your clutch.

i think before i would replace the tach i would check the clutch sounds to me like it needs to be taken apart and cleaned. if it increased 400 rpms on engadgement from just sitting over the summer there is probably rust or corrsion in the fornt clutch.

just a thought

As far as I know, both primary and secondary are stock

 . Primary has a silver spring and secondary has a blueish/green spring. How hard is it to take apart and clean? Do you grease it? How can I tell if the secondary clutch is in the NO.2 position? My neighbor tightened it one full turn for better throttle response. A few weeks ago on the lake, at WOT I was turning about 6500 RPM. Thanks
