Top of the day gents..
Well it looks like I blew my Kohler 295 engine due to bad seals and \ or lean carb and \ or stupid user..I did stop the engine when it started to sound like something was rattling around in the motor so it did not seize...
When I took off the heads I found that the piston on the clutch side had chucks missing around the perimeter and a bit of ring broke off.. It appears the chunk of ring pounded into the top of the head a few hundred times. It has marked the inside of the head with small dents all about 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch deep. Each dent is about the size of a pencil tip... Outside of that the spark plug and hole are undamaged and the head does not appear cracked or warped..
My question is can I still use this head when I rebuild ????
Many Thanks
Hazard

Maj_hazard,
I know exactly what you mean, I had a motorcycle engine end up the same way. I replaced the piston and used the head over, but I don't think it ran as good as it should have.
The proper transfer of the exhaust gases depends on the smooth surface inside the head. So, it could run but you should find another head.

If you sand down any sharp edges you can most likely use it but leaving sharp edges/points could cause hot spots. When you pull the motor apart pay extra good attention to the rod bearings on both ends. When the bearings go bad the needles can get sucked it the motor and cause this damage you have also including the damage to the rings.

To add to what Andy said, I would split the lower cases and look for chunks of metal in the bottom. I found lots of metal pieces in the bottom of my liquifire engine when I tore it down from piston failure. When you put the engine back together, follow the guide lines in the FAQ section.
