I have a jd 340s with a kec 340 engine. It starts fine, runs and will take you on a speedy trip, however when it warms up it dies, no power!! Any ideas on what might be wrong greatly appreciated.

dasalenb,
Check the simple things first such as:
choke cables set correctly to allow about 1/8 slack in each one
clogged fuel filters, 1 inside of tank and 1 external
impluse line hooked up, line good without any cracks or splits
floats set correctly
needle/ seat in carbs clean

check your spark and check your plugs before and after running it. It could have dirty points,or check compression or maybe new coil, caps and wires or for a wire that is grounded or wiggles around

I have a 400 with the same problem, but i think it might be due to rust in the fuel line, Engine was rebuilt, lots of spark, and carb was rebuilt. It will go for about a mile and then will die. I can limp it home choked but it dies quick when choke is open. I have clear fuel line and in the intake, instead of the green gas, there is about 2 inches of brown. Engine really wants to go when started but i think that the fuel line is obstructed. Should i redo the whole fuel lines (they're new) or just the in tank lines and filter? Also, is the line with filter the only fitting in the tank that needs line? Thanks.

JDXsand00s,
It sounds like you are due for a complete fuel system clean-out. You should drain any remaining gas and safely discard it. Remove and power wash the tank, replace the inner fuel filter and the external filter and clean the carb again. Check all fuel lines, replace if neccesary.

Yeah Ryan the in tank check valves help keep debree out but they sure keep the fuel out also when clogged. I have made a temporary fuel tank out of a 1 gallon oil jug. You just drill holes in the cap and run lines through it. I did this just for testing on sleds with dirty tanks.

The intank filter wa good, i blew through it and it closed the hole, but i will clean the tank: the gas is really brown. Will i have to also clean the carb, it was freshly rebuilt a couple of months ago?

THe sysptoms sound remarkably like both JD500s (440 engine) I have previously owned. I was a bit more niave then, than I am now. I changed just about everything.... the operative word being "Just". It ran great cold, but would (after 5 - 10 minutes) begin to loose power and die. I could keep it running a while longer witht he choke.... I sold both of these, but the feedback I got then was that it was the seals... and thats what I def. think was the problem.
When the old seals warm up, I suspect they would leaking and/or not causing the vacuum necessary to draw in the righ fule mixture... wish I had those machines back....
Good Luck
Dan
