79 Trailfire seal problem

Post by Rayzors79TF »

Hello All, This is my first post so glad to meet you all, My name is Ray. That being said I have a 1979 Trailfire that is giving me the blues. I discovered after pounding my head on the wall for weeks that the crank seal is bad on the clutch side. It has worked its way completly out of the case on the shaft. So any pointers here would be welcome. I have sorced a complete gasket and seal kit as well as the clutch puller but I am in the dark on what to do or understand exactly what needs to be done. This is my first sled so I am new here. I am fairly mechanical and have rebuilt several car engines but nothing 2 stroke. Am I asking for trouble by trying to change these seals myself. What all is involved here. I cannot find a repair book so I am in the dark. Last but not I am willing to have a pro work it out but I am on a budget so thats a concern. Besides I have no clue were I could take the motor here in Oregon. Thanks for any help.

Welcome Ray!!

I'd say try rebuilding it yourself. The TF motors are fairly simple to work on and easy to rebuild seeing that they are air cooled. The tech manual can still be purchased from JD for the sled. This manual will take you step by step through the rebuilding process and tell you all the specified torques. You can also find these on ebay from time to time.

Check out the FAQ section on this site. There is a thread on engine rebuilding, where to order the service/tech manuals, and one on clutch pullers.

Good Luck!

Eric

The Manual will prove invaluable not only for your engine rebuild but for any other issue that arrises on your machine as it covers the entire sled. A very good investment.

First off welcome Ray glad you could make it to our corner of the world, :beers;
Unless you find someone at the local Deere dealer ship that has worked there for more than 24 years you'll probably get the :wall: "Deere doesn't build Snowmobiles" :lol: saying. But them again you might find a dealership that still has parts you never know until you ask :dance: ..If they give you the first answer you can aways come back with :think: " I can see that your new here with John Deere, so let me help you out so you don't embarrass yourself again, Deere produced snowmobiles from 1972 through the 1984 model year then sold the rights to the sleds & all the parts that wasn't in the dealerships to Polaris who they assumed was going to produce the next years models but didn't." then just turn & walk out.... :whistle:
You can order a "Service Manual" (Maybe someone else can help you out on what number it is I can't but it should start out with a SM -???or TM-???) directly from Deere on line for your Trailfire or if you watch e-bay they are on there from time to time. I would also recommend a Deere Fine Tune Manual 79-83 ( # SP-509-H2 ) Blue cover, it has a lot better info on drive clutch, driven clutch, carb, etc. break down, & fine tuning, This should be used along with your Service Manual when working on clutching or carbs. Good Luck & any questions don't be afraid to ask, once you get the manuals.....
Oh yea by the way if one seal is bad more than likely the mag side is probably bad also which means the fly wheel will need to be removed also, you will need a good flywheel puller & some real strong metric bolts, also if the flywheel has a ring gear the outer fan housing will need to be removed before the flywheel can be removed. so purchase the SM first before attempting to do the work or you could damage something..

Thanks again for all the advice on were to get a book. I have not torn into the sled because I have been waiting for the proper procedure and tools. I dont want to mess it up. The sled only has a hair over 20 hours on it so it should still be good on the inside. I did do a compression check on it this morning and it blew exactly 130# on both cylinders. The numbers seemed like they may be a hair low but were at least consistent.

Anything over 100 PSI (compression testers will very) is good for MOST 2-strokes in snowmobiles ( as long as both Cyl are within 5 lbs. of each other & the cyl aren't dry from sitting a long periods of time) Compression SHOULD be checked with both plugs removed & the throttle held in the WOT (Wide Open Throttle Position).
