CDI Problems
First of all i have read the section in the FAQ but i could use some more help. My 76 cyclone shows spark when the plug is out of the engine, but won't rev more than idle with both plugs connected. When i disconnect one, however, it will run on the other cylender great. I had it to 60 on cyl 1 but i don't know how and it was for about 2 seconds. When i reconnect the cylender, just idle again. Is my cdi box, stator, or outer coils bad? Also, i don't know readings of my stator, i can never get a reading that makes sense except the trigger coils. I will try what tttl suggested in the faq but what is wrong if it is malfunctioning. i also believe that this is the problem with my 77 liquifire and 79 spitfire, i have never revved either above idle, but i will try my spit on one cylender and see if it does anything else. i can't try my lf as i pulled it to change a piston. thanks.

the two external coils aren't deere, there are replacement ones with two plugins, on for a ground and one for the cdi leads, i tried switching the wires in many different combinations (i really need the original coil setup) but nothing changed, i could get it to run on either cyl at a time fairly well but not both. could it be that the staor isn't giving the cdi enough juice to spark at the same time, so when just one is sparking its gets full stator power and is firing suficiently? i can get new stators for the ccws and kohler easier than good cdi boxes.

I think you answered one of your own questions, you need to get the oem style replacements. They are still available. If you can not get good ohm readings, the meter is not properly grounded when checking the low and high speed windings. One test lead must be grounded to the engine block if the stator is still hooked up.

CDI Problems
Just did the tttl faq test, just -, no +. Does that rule out anything? Is my CDi still god because it only fires at he top. Stator is at 1.9 k ohm and 60 ohm for yellow and blue. I will try and get a new one, should have bought 10 from Dk trader at $25 apiece. I'm now led to believe that the horrible external coils are taking too much of the stator to fire at the same time, but with one disconnected a single plug can get the max output from stator and run fine. Also with both connected, i think that only cyl 1 is firing, when i take out plugs cyl 2 still looks new and is still cold. Thanks.

According to TITTL, the cdi box should be ok. I think the external coils should be replaced with the proper ones, then it may fire correctly. You may find the stator still needs replaced with ohm reading for the low speed coil not in spec.
Replace the external coils, then go from there.

yeah change out those coils keep them though they are the correct type for your kohler powered 300 aswell as many ski doos. If its any help to you I have a pair of used coils off a liquifire 1977 that look the same as your original coil. They are not pretty looks like they were in a little carb fire but they did spark well and the motor ran before I sold the other electrical parts from it. You can have them for $15 shipped and can get you pics if intrested.

amazing, after the different coils, a cdi box, and getting the float unstuck, the sled has some life in it. it still runs on one cylender at times, i think that it needs to warm up to run better because it started moving better after a few laps around town. plan on taking it in the field tomorrow and see if i can really open it up. now i just need to fine tune it, get the headlight working, and register and she'll be ready for the trail if i don't screw it up somehow before then. i should almost have my 77 liquifire ready to go as well when i get a 30mm seal and the crankcase blasted. i just hope these sleds go as good as the x6, i rode it for 3 hours today and had a blast. on the right snowdrift it can get about 30 feet of airtime, not bad for an older sled.thanks for all the help guys.

CDI Problems
took the cyclone out today and just what i expected, i couldn't put hardly any good miles on it. right off the bat it seemed to run pretty good, though on one cylinder: one of the plug was wet fouling. switched it and it really went, about a 10 second blast on both after about a minute of 30mph bogging. then it seemed to not want to run at all, it would barely to 15mph. it was definite one-banging with a few pops here and there of it trying to go again and another few instances of stall and run on one again. it ran at 15 for about 5 miles then i parked it and switched to the trailfire. i switched the plugs to see if the outer coils were weak and it didn't seem to make a difference. all of the time though one of the plugs was firing and the other was covered in gas and oil. after about 5 hours of riding the trailfire i came back to the cyclone and it seemed to run good at 30 with a few seconds of both cylinders here and there, and after about a mile it went to crap again and went about 5 mph. the spark seems kind of weak in the cylinder with the wet foul, but this switches. also, when running the sled with one cylinder unplugged, both run and both run like when it idles. is it possible that the stator is took weak to power both coils? i think that my stator to crankcase connection is bad: when i cleaned my liquifire stator it was corroded and had no spark and then had all sorts of spark when cleaned and reinstalled. the last time i checked the stator read 1.8kohm and 60 ohm. thanks.

Everytime a problem like this comes up, very few people take the advice. Now go back and check out my post in FAQ section on this type of ignition. I checked the stator read 1.8kohm and 60 ohm The low speed winding has too low of ohms to work correctly. The low speed winding has to have 2.7K,
plus or minus 10 % to work. If the ohms are low, the stator is bad.

hey there, i have 2 76' 440 cyclones, and i had the same problem of running on one cly. found out on one that the stator was puttin out just enough voltage to run both cly's at idle, as soon as i would hit the gas, it would run on one cly. i guess the cdi needed like 24 volts to run, and my stator was puting out like 15 or something like that. replaced the stator and sled fixed. before that tryed different coils. cdi, replaced crank seals, but it was that stator the whole time. good luck
