ongoing stator problems

Post by flames4555 »

I know the stator problems well and had replaced several that measured good when put in , but quickly failed after running the sled a little bit. Most of the stators that i got were used ones off of ebay and measured between 2.3-2.7k when bought. I really think my problem was a string of bad stators.
When I freshened up the motor this last time I did change out the timing ring and replaced the crank with an n.o.s. one I got off of ebay. The motor seems fine now , but time will tell....
If i go back to some of the failed stators and measure them now they measure in spec , but I know that if I put them in the sled they will most definately fail, so be careful buying used stators.
I have been told that it's a combination of corrision and the very very thing wire used that ultimately creates a short and kills the stator. The newer version stators with the round plug have a much better dope coating which makes them more corrision resistant . That is the style that in currently in my cyclone now. I also payed very close attention to all of the ground connections and made sure the motor itself was grounded well to the chassis.

If this stator goes bad as well I garantee my sled will have a points set up shortly after.

Thanks Kevin for the info. I will take all the above information and see what happens with the couple used ones.

I wish there was a good source of new stators? I bought some cyclone stuff from a person in PA, I think his name was cyclone crazy. Any NOS stators out there for sale?

I am also curious that a person earlier in the discussion mentioned about a person in Canada that could rebuild stators. Is this true, has anyone used this person? Does anyone have his contact information?

Thanks
Matt

I had contacted RMStator in Quebec, Canada back last Dec. He said he would have to open up a bad stator to determine if he could rebuild it. If so, it would cost around $200.00.
