what engine do i have?

Post by kevcboy »

I have a 1973 400, im trying to figure out which pistons i need to get for it. The engine has a plate on it that says KEC 340, but when i look the sled up on dennis kirk for the parts, i keep getting a KEC 400. I'm confused, can anyone help?

Also while im on the topic of the engine, the carb is stamped with WDA32, does the 32 mean anything because im not finding any rebuild kits with the 32.

thanks

I have a pair of NOS 400 Deere pistons AM52370 (including rings & wrist pins) for JD 400 sled serial number -11,000 this might sub too the newer pistons for serial numbers above 11,001- but I'm not sure of that
$100.00 for the pair including shipping

As far as I know, there is one Walbro kit that covers pretty much what we talk about here. WR, WD, WDA.

Someone recently ordered a set of KEC-340 pistons from DK and recieved the wrong ones. The part number was right, but it was not the right part number for the 340. If you get it from them make sure it is a 60mm bore.

If you order the walbro carb kit just make sure that you get the full kit w/springs and all the goodies because there is a kit out there for like $6-$7.00 thats only the gasgets. I go to the local sled shop yama/polaris and they have a couple on hand for about $24.00 if not, they can get it for you and it will have all that you need for all wr,wd,wda's.

Now about the pistons I have a Q. There was a post about the '72 CCW340 pistons and if the 340/5 would be the same. My book only shows the CCW 340/1&2, 340/3 and 340/4 all having the 60mm bore & stroke under CCW. I know they made a 340/5 Under kioritz KEC340/5 with the same 60mm bore & stroke. Now is the /5 diffrent and how? since I have a 72 400 I would like to know what I can do case something goes wrong with my pistons.

Thanks matt for the notice, mine were 60 mm though but i thought i better check.

as for the 340 vs 340/5, i asked this awhile ago and the consensus was the heads had taller fins and the porting was different. This pistons are the same however.

as for carb kits, manufacturers supply is the best i've seen as you can get the whole kit for $26, the diaphragm kit for $9, just the diaphragm for $3, the metal fuel pump leaf for $1, and the orange little check valve for $1. they are pretty much universal for all walbro carbs.

as for new pistons, i have some am53056's that i'll sell, $50 a pair or $25 for one shipped.

Another thing to add about the carb kit, try and get a genuine walbro kit, as they are much better than the aftermarket ones, some of the aftermarket ones parts don't fit the same as original. You can get the genuine ones from central snowmobile.

I'm fuzzy on this, but didn't we establish that the early 340s had a smaller piston pin than the later models? I was thinking Matt had brought that up. The cranks are different diameters, that we know, 25mm '72 - 30 mm later.

OK, I checked with JD parts.

'72 KEC 340s and '73 340/4s used the same piston, AM52370 subs to AM52485.

'74 on up, 340/5s use piston AM53056.

Also, Ryan is correct in that the heads are thicker on the /5s, requiring a longer reach plug. More fin area on the jugs as well.

I think they all are 60 mm pistons, but it looks like you need to be carefull you specify the correct year or engine model.
