More question about 400 engine

Post by kevcboy »

So i measured the pistons out of my KEC 340 today and they were 2.350 inches in diameter, i'm pretty sure they are wiseco pistons because they have a w cast into them. I still am trying to find another one to put in it.

Also, i need some parts for the track, the first boogie wheel bar, with three wheels, is all bent so i need one of those and i also need a boogie wheel bar that only holds two wheels, the sled is a 1973 400

Be aware that the '72 sleds used entirely different bogie suspension than did '73 on up.
The '72s bogie axles clamp to the bottom of the running boards, while all the rest bolt bolt to brackets that hang straight down from the tunnel sides.
The '72s have steel axles inside the steel bogie tubes, the rest are aluminum inside steel tubes. The wheels themselves may look different, but interchange as far as I know.

I looked it up in my service manual.
It appears that both '72 and '73 used the clamp system.
I stand corrected.

No biggy Brian I just couldnt remember and swore out of all the jd's I stripped about 6 that only 1 was a 72 and swore they all had the clamps. I wish they bolted to the tabs those carrage type bolts in the clamps usally spin in the aluminum tunnel if they are rusty and it makes for a hassel.

Make sure that whatever you do for pistons that you have a matched set Meaning if you now have Wiseco's & your only looking for 1 piston, make sure you buy a Wiseco to go back into it, (don't use a Wiseco on one side & an OEM on the other) There will be a differance in the weight of the pistons, a differance in where the rings are positioned on the pistons & a differance of the type of rings if you miss match pistons, that wil result in different running temps on the cylinders.
Also 2.3622" is 60 mm
