Hello all, first post,
Just bought a 73 JDX4 w/ a Kohler engine. Problem is the machine acts like its runs out of fuel, then is hard to pull a prime? previous owner said that the crank seal on pto side should be changed, could this be the prob? sucking air somplace in the fuel line?

I have not owned only a few days, previous owner did not describe any real starting issue's only the stalling (acts like it runs out of fuel) then will start back up again.

Please go to the FAQs and read the " Trouble Shooting Your Sled" topic.
With machines this old, you pretty much have to start at one end and work your way to the other.
It does sound like it is a fuel issue, but how and why is yet to be determined.

I agree with the fuel being the problem. start at the gas tank pick up screen (if that model has one) and end at the carb (after cleaning it completely). Replace any questionable item. Then you know what is not the problem. Going through the fuel system is something I do on all two-strokes when I first get them. Don't want them to run lean.

I was showing this sled to a friend the other day, and he noticed alot of air in the return line that he didnt think should be there. Any response to that???

Air bubbles in the return line is normal. If you have air bubbles in the supply line it's sucking in air from somewhere.

I took the x4 to a shop today to get a quick look. I needed to keep choking it to keep it running, so the guy grabbed a can of starting fluid, sprayed around the crank seals...all good, then sprayed around the carb/engine gasket and she picked right up. His suggestion is that its sucking air around a gasket or the plastic spacer may be cracked, resulting in the lean out and need for the choke. I will disassemble, inspect, and let ya know what I find.
