Massey Whirlwind

Post by S_Kyle »

I recently picked up a real nice pair of 440 Whirlwinds. The only problem is that one of the motors is stuck :wall: . I have never dealt with these sleds or there cousins the whips. Are parts still around for these motors or am I S.O.L? The stuck one only has 2100 miles o it and the other a few more as the guys kid used to ride it after he and his wife stop riding.

I a currently moving around with a cast on my leg so I didn't take to long of a look at them and they are staying at the guys place for now. Any of you guys know much about them? I quickly checked spark in the good one and only have it in one side, I could have been any things but do these sleds have points or CDI?

Any info appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

They have points. The Cuyuna twins are very strong engines. Parts are easy to find and still being made as the basic engine is a favorite of the ultralight folks.

Fix both of them up as they are a light, fast sexy sleds. Nice graphics also.

I figured they were a half decent find and I haven't seen to many of the para rail sleds around. Can you ball park off hand the top speed on these things. The best thing is they are 100% original, even have the original unbleached windshields.

Looks like a find times two Scott.

I do not see any broken pans and the handle bar pads are there. Not to mention the seats! Cool.
Always liked the twin eye balls.

I still can't believe that the pans are in that good of shape. From my experience plastic and fiberglass pans are normally in a few pieces by now. And to top it all off I found a 77 440 LF in similar shape today only 11?? original miles talked to the guys brother in law and can probably get it for around $100.

Do you mean 11 or 11XX miles?

I am reminded of a guy that had a trashed out Scorpion on ebay last month. He found himself an NOS speedo and tried to past his basket case off as having only 7 miles on it.

I know it is possible that a machine could have only 11 miles on it but what are the odds?

Either way Scott, a nice sled for $100?? Don't think twice.

Sorry for the confusion it is 1100 + change. The sleds looks like it only has 1100 miles on it. A little sun bleaching and a 1x1 square tube for a rear bumper. I will have to call the guy when he gets back from hunting on Thursday, cool thing is very very little of the paint has flaked off of the tunnel like my other early liqui's

Scott - I am currently rebuilding a 1977 Whirlwind that had some engine troubles as well. I would suggest getting with Dennis at "Scorpsrus" when you need some parts. Dennis specializes in everything Scorpion and has a monster load of both NOS and used parts for these late Massey sleds.

Here is an email address if you would like to contact him. scorpsrus@charter.net

Good luck on the project.

Thanks, It looks like the only body parts I need are a windshield, two latches and a vent at the back of the hood where a boot struck it. I also need to find some gaskets as one of the motors is stuck and not coming unstuck easily.

Scott - I bought a NOS low-profile windshield from Dennis and it fits MUCH better that the Sno-Stuff unit that was on it. The best part is, the NOS part was cheaper than any aftermarket windshield out there.

Well looked at Massey #1(Broke Windshield) today. Cleaned it up at the car wash, a few scrapes but nothing that's is serious. My sister was kind enough to mention that there is a tear in y track :wall: I did not notice. the track is just about ripped in half

Figured that I would try the motor, I think I have to thank the owner next time I see him. He cleaned the carb, drained the tank, and by the looks of dumped a pile of oil down the holes. Pulled the carb and gave it a quick once over, added some fuel and puled the rope. took a few pulls because of the oil, I guess. Runs like a top  .But neither the kill switch or key work, had to pull the plug wires to kill the thing

My next project will be to tear out the suspension and track and replace it with another. I have never dealt with these para-rail sleds before. Are there things to watch out for with this setup? I have to rip it all out so I will check over all of the bearings etc. Any pointers will be appreciated.

Thanks

Tracks are common so that should not be an issue.

As for the kill/key problem look at the engine connector as sometimes a spade will push back in the connector.

Rail system.... Lots of aluminum spacers to check for wear. 15 boggie bearings to lube. Examine the vertical shock in the rear arm and look for cracks on the arm. Lube rear idlers.

Also consider the drive axle bearings and sprockets. If any of the holes in the rails are elongated you can drill them out to 3/4" and use a 3/4-5/8" bushing.

All in all it is an easy one to renew. Good luck.

I also have 2 massey whips. Unfortunatly mine were not in as good shape. One even has a JD 340 in it. One thing to watch with the track is that there was 2 different suspensions. ParaRide and ParaRail. The track is different.

You can find most of the info for the sled here:
http://www.vintagesnow.com/MF.html

The 76 manual will work for the 77.
