I need help
I recently got a 79 440 trailfire that has been a BARN RAT for 15 years or so. I have removed carb and cleaned. the floats are set correctly replaced fuel pump and fuel lines and filter, new plugs. 40/1 oil/fuel mixture. it will run but it runs real rich and doesn't idle . (oil drips out of the exhaust). could the cranks seals cause it to run this bad . I could use anyones input. thanks.

Check for mouse nest in exhaust also check choke adjustment.
Even if one of these fixes the sled you should replace the crank seals anyhow as after 15 years of sitting they will be hard and will not seal very well causing a burned piston at the very least.

i just did the motor on my 80 trailfire cause it wouldnt idle and was hard to start. full gaskets and crank seals. cleaned carb and it starts with ease and idles great. well worth the gasket set and it doesnt take a lot of time. i think i spent a couple of evenings to do the motor.

mix your fuel at 50 to 1 no need to run so rich.

One thing that happens, that is not as obvious as it sounds, is that the engine may be running on one cylinder. This causes unburned fuel (black goo ) to run out of the exhaust.

I found that shooting some starting fluid around the crank seal area while its running can tell you if there is a good seal or not. if it starts reving up they are shot. But with there age you might want to just change out the set.
